Body Found After Chalet Fire in Grobbendonk, Arson Probed

A body has been discovered in a chalet following a heavy fire that swept through the De Kloek campsite in Grobbendonk, Belgium, on Thursday morning. The Antwerp prosecutor’s office has confirmed the discovery and stated that arson is being investigated as a possible cause of the blaze, according to VRT NWS.

The Incident

The fire brigade was called in the early hours of Thursday morning after neighbors heard a loud bang emanating from the campsite, which is located behind the well-known indoor and outdoor playground De Kloek. By the time firefighters arrived, the flames had already spread from the initial chalet to a second structure. Two chalets were completely destroyed, and a third sustained heavy damage.

Kristof Geens, spokesperson for the Brandweer Zone Kempen, described the response: “The fire was under control after about an hour. Code orange still applies and there are many trees here, so we immediately called in extra pumpers and tankers.”

Approximately 25 campers were evacuated from the site and sheltered in the canteen of the De Kloek playground. The fire was brought under control after roughly one hour of intensive firefighting operations.

Discovery of the Body

Initially, the fire brigade reported that there were no casualties. However, during the final stages of firefighting operations, a body was discovered in one of the chalets. Kristof Aerts of the Antwerp prosecutor’s office addressed the situation: “At this moment we cannot yet connect an identity with certainty. Because there may be arson involved, the lab and fire expert are currently conducting an investigation into the cause. That can take some time.”

The Disaster Victim Identification (DVI) team of the Federal Police has been deployed to the scene to assist with identifying the victim. The investigation into the fire’s origin is expected to take considerable time, as RTV reported.

Community Shock and Response

The fire sent shockwaves through the local community. Neighbors Maria and Jack, whose property sits directly behind the campsite, described the terrifying early morning experience. “I thought they were shooting in the forest,” Maria told reporters. “I went to look and then I saw there was a fire. It was quite frightening because the flames were high and our house is right behind it. The adrenaline was rushing through my body. I immediately packed a bag with some things because you never know.”

Her husband Jack expressed relief that conditions had not been worse: “There are all these coniferous trees here. If they catch fire and burning branches fall on your roof, it’s immediately a sea of fire. We were lucky there was no wind.”

Mayor Marianne Verhaert of Grobbendonk issued a statement expressing her condolences. “The news deeply affects me,” she said. “My thoughts go first and foremost to the family, friends, and loved ones of the victim. I wish them a lot of strength in these incredibly difficult moments and ask everyone to respect their privacy.”

The mayor also acknowledged the impact on evacuated residents, adding: “Also for the residents of the weekend zone this was a particularly impactful morning. Several people had to leave their familiar place in a hurry and were evacuated. To them I want to say: you are not alone. As a municipality, we are doing everything we can to accommodate you as well as possible and support you where needed.”

Extreme Heat and Fire Risk Context

The fire occurred during a period of extreme heat and drought in the Kempen region, with code orange fire risk in effect. Kristof Geens of the Brandweer Zone Kempen noted that code orange conditions were still active at the time of the blaze, reflecting the heightened vulnerability of the area to fires. The dry conditions and dense coniferous vegetation surrounding the campsite amplified the danger, as neighbors Jack’s account of the fire risk underscores.

According to Geel FM, a third chalet also sustained damage in the blaze, and approximately 20 campers were evacuated in the initial response.

The lab and fire expert teams are conducting a thorough investigation into the cause of the fire, with arson being treated as a distinct possibility. The identity of the victim has not yet been confirmed, and authorities are awaiting the results of the DVI team’s work.
