China’s Dalian Heavy Industry Delivers 15MW Wind Castings for World’s Largest Onshore Turbine
Chinese heavy machinery manufacturer Dalian Huarui Heavy Industry Group has achieved a key technological breakthrough in onshore large-megawatt wind power castings, successfully delivering 15MW doubly-fed wind turbine bearing housing and base castings that will power the world’s largest single-unit onshore wind turbine currently available, according to Xinhua News.
The castings, independently developed by the company, completed production and passed all customer inspections and acceptance checks, marking a significant milestone in China’s renewable energy equipment manufacturing sector.
The 15MW Turbine Platform
The delivered castings will be fitted to a 15MW onshore wind turbine platform featuring advanced modular design with power output adjustable across the 13-16MW range, as reported by Science and Technology Daily. The turbine’s rotor diameter spans 240-260 meters, with tower heights ranging from 135 to 190 meters and a maximum swept area of 53,000 square meters.
The turbine’s overall performance places it in the global first tier. Its ultra-large castings demand extreme material properties, casting processes, dimensional accuracy, and internal quality standards, making the successful delivery a testament to the company’s advanced manufacturing capabilities.
The 15MW wind turbine will be deployed at the Xinjiang Tacheng Emin 1.3 million kW wind power project after completing wind farm testing, as noted by Tencent News. The turbine’s main gearbox, developed by CRRC Qishuyan Institute, entered batch production in June 2026, marking the first domestically produced 15MW onshore wind power main gearbox.
Strategic Positioning in Large-Megawatt Castings
The trend toward large-megawatt wind power represents the industry’s development direction, and Dalian Heavy Industry has positioned itself ahead of the curve. The company has completed R&D and batch supply of 3-18MW full series wind power castings and has conducted trial production of 20+MW castings for four leading OEM customers, according to China Economic Net.
This capability builds on the company’s substantial investment in advanced manufacturing infrastructure. In April 2024, Dalian Heavy Industry’s large wind power casting intelligent manufacturing base commenced production in Wafangdian, Dalian, with a total investment of 2.575 billion RMB and an annual production capacity of 300,000 tons, as Ifeng News reported. The facility features China’s first intelligent coating production line for large wind power castings, with an intelligent coverage rate exceeding 50% and a 30% improvement in comprehensive production efficiency.
The China Foundry Association has described the base as a benchmark project that will lead the large-scale and intelligent development trend of sea and land wind power castings for the next 10-15 years.
Financial Strength and R&D Commitment
Dalian Heavy Industry’s technological push is backed by substantial financial resources. The company reported revenue of 14.281 billion RMB in 2024, up 18.97% year-over-year, with net profit of 498 million RMB, according to Sina Finance. R&D investment from 2020-2024 totaled 3.546 billion RMB, underscoring the company’s commitment to innovation.
The company’s products are exported to 96 countries and regions worldwide, with overseas sales revenue growing 175.37% to 2.293 billion RMB in 2024. New energy equipment revenue accounted for 24% of total revenue, reflecting the strategic importance of this sector.
Industry Context: China’s Wind Power Leadership
China has become the absolute leader in the global wind power industry, with Chinese wind turbine manufacturers occupying the top six positions globally in 2025 market share rankings, according to an industry analysis by Eastmoney. During the 15th Five-Year Plan period, China’s annual new wind power installations are expected to remain at 100-130GW.
The industry shows four core trends: large-scale onshore bases, deep-sea offshore development, larger turbine units, and manufacturing globalization. Wind power casting remains a key bottleneck for large-megawatt turbine development due to the extreme requirements for material properties, casting processes, dimensional accuracy, and internal quality.
