China’s C919 Opens First International Route to Ulaanbaatar
China’s domestically-produced C919 commercial aircraft completed its first scheduled international commercial flight on Wednesday, landing in Ulaanbaatar, Mongolia, and marking a significant milestone in the country’s push to compete in the global commercial aviation market. Air China flight CA723, carrying 121 passengers, departed Beijing Capital International Airport at approximately 3 p.m. and touched down at Chinggis Khaan International Airport at 4:58 p.m. local time, where it was greeted with a water cannon salute — the highest ceremonial honor in international civil aviation, according to Global Times.
The flight, operated by a C919-100(ER) registered B-919Y, marks the first time China’s self-developed trunk jetliner has operated a regular international commercial route open to ordinary passengers and included in the global ticketing system, as Zaobao reported.
A Milestone for China’s Aviation Ambitions
The C919 is China’s first self-developed trunk jetliner built in accordance with international airworthiness standards with independent intellectual property rights. The aircraft, developed by the state-owned Commercial Aircraft Corporation of China (COMAC), is positioned as a competitor to the Airbus A320 and Boeing 737 families. The development program was launched in 2008, and the aircraft entered commercial service with China Eastern Airlines on May 28, 2023, according to China Daily.
Air China will operate the C919 on the Beijing-Ulaanbaatar round-trip route as CA723/CA724 with seven flights per week — daily service — departing Beijing at 3 p.m. and arriving at 5:15 p.m., with the return flight departing at 6:30 p.m. and arriving at 8:35 p.m. The single-trip distance is approximately 1,200 kilometers with a flight time of about two hours.
The route was previously served by Air China’s Boeing 737 MAX 8 aircraft, as AeroTime noted.
Expanding Operations and Growing Fleet
Air China currently operates 12 C919 aircraft in its fleet, with a cumulative total of over 12,000 safe flights and more than 1.62 million passenger trips carried. As of August 12, C919 aircraft operated by Air China, China Eastern Airlines, and China Southern Airlines had cumulatively opened 58 routes, served 26 cities, and carried over 7.5 million passengers, according to Xinhua News.
COMAC has delivered 41 C919s as of July 20, with cumulative safe flight hours exceeding 130,000. However, production remains a work in progress — COMAC delivered only 15 C919s in 2025, well below its earlier target of 75. The company has set a target of 200 aircraft annual production capacity by 2029, as Aerospace Global News reported.
The C919’s international debut follows the earlier overseas expansion of COMAC’s smaller C909 regional jet, which already operates commercially in Indonesia, Laos, and Vietnam. With the C919’s Ulaanbaatar flight, both domestically-produced passenger aircraft types now achieve joint operations at an overseas airport, since the C909 already operates regular flights on the Hohhot-Ulaanbaatar route.
Expert Perspectives on the Milestone
Industry experts view the international route as a crucial step in building the C919’s operational credibility beyond China’s borders. Tian Linchuan, assistant researcher at Shanghai Jiao Tong University’s School of Aeronautics and Astronautics, told Zaobao that the C919’s day-by-day cross-border operations will “completely open up the entire workflow including air traffic control coordination, dispatch scheduling, overseas ground services, aircraft parts supply, and immigration/emigration procedures,” accumulating real overseas operational data and forming a replicable international operations standard for future expansion into Southeast Asia and Central Asia routes.
Wang Ya’nan, editor-in-chief of Beijing-based Aerospace Knowledge magazine, told Global Times that the C919’s biggest achievement is that China has built the capability to take a large passenger jet from the drawing board all the way to a certified commercial product, covering overall design, airframe manufacturing, system integration, and airworthiness approval.
Han Tao, an expert with China’s civil aviation think tank, noted that as cross-border services expand, the C919 will need to move closer to international operating standards by building a support network that goes beyond its domestic maintenance system — covering regulatory coordination, overseas maintenance facilities, and spare-parts logistics.
Challenges Ahead
The C919 still faces significant hurdles on the path to becoming a global competitor. The aircraft has Chinese type certification, but European Aviation Safety Agency (EASA) certification remains under evaluation and is expected to take several more years. The C919 also relies on CFM International’s LEAP-1C engine, with China developing the CJ-1000A as a future indigenous alternative. Additionally, the UK-based aviation publication Airline Economics noted that Malaysia Airlines continues to consider the C919 as a future fleet option, but Western regulatory certification remains a key requirement.
What’s Next
The Beijing-Ulaanbaatar operation gives COMAC a useful first step in international operations. While the route is relatively short and close to China’s existing operating base, international aviation is built one route at a time. The next stage is less about proving that the aircraft can cross a border and more about proving that COMAC can keep expanding the fleet, increase production, support aircraft reliably, and build the regulatory and customer confidence required for the C919 to operate in more markets. As the aircraft continues to accumulate international operating experience, its competitiveness in the global commercial aviation market is expected to strengthen.
