When Will Service Robots Enter Chinese Homes?
At the Lansing Technology Yong’an campus in Liuyang, Hunan Province, a 173-centimeter-tall robot recently demonstrated dancing capabilities that observers described as “not inferior to real humans.” The display, part of the state-organized “Vibrant China Research Tour,” showcased a future that Jiang Nan, President of Lansing Technology China Region, says is closer than many expect. Service robots capable of helping tutor children’s homework and assisting with housework will “soon be realized,” Jiang told Xinhua News.
A Booming Industry with Ambitious Goals
The optimism from Lansing Technology reflects a broader surge in China’s humanoid robot sector. In the first half of 2026, global humanoid robot shipments reached approximately 19,100 units — more than triple the 5,100 units shipped during the same period last year. China accounts for over 97 percent of global shipments, with market leaders Zhiyuan Robot shipping 8,400 units (44 percent global share) and Unitree shipping 5,900 units (31 percent).
Industry analysts have dubbed 2026 the “mass production year” for humanoid robots, with full-year global shipments projected to reach roughly 60,000 units and forecasts suggesting 500,000 units by 2030. Yet over 70 percent of humanoid robots shipped in the first half of 2026 were destined for industrial and commercial use, up from approximately 50 percent last year — highlighting that the home market remains largely untapped.
Lansing Technology’s Robotics Pivot
Lansing Technology, best known as a major Apple supplier, has emerged as one of China’s largest embodied intelligence hardware manufacturing platforms. The company’s robotics subsidiary, Lansing Intelligent Robot, generated revenue exceeding 1 billion yuan in 2025, shipping over 3,000 humanoid robots and more than 10,000 quadruped robot dogs. Its Yong’an campus has an annual production capacity of 500,000 units.
The company has built partnerships with leading robot developers including Zhiyuan Robot, BrainCo, and Lingbao CASBOT, and recently co-founded Zhongke Huisi with Zhongke Huiling and Huaxia Investment Group to develop dexterous hand products. Founder Zhou Qunfei, Hunan’s wealthiest person with a net worth of 111 billion yuan, has positioned robotics as a core pillar of the company’s future alongside AI smart terminals and commercial aerospace.
The Gap Between Demonstration and Daily Life
Despite the impressive demonstrations and production capacity, significant challenges remain before service robots become a common household presence. Stanford’s 2026 AI Index Report found that humanoid robots achieve only a 12.4 percent success rate on 1,000 real household tasks, compared to 89.4 percent in simulation environments — a stark reminder of the gap between controlled testing and the unpredictable realities of home life.
Cost presents another formidable barrier. Basic humanoid robots retail for around 100,000 yuan, while total cost of ownership for industrial applications can reach 500,000 to 600,000 yuan including operations and maintenance. For most Chinese households, such price points remain far out of reach.
Technical limitations compound these challenges. Robot hands have a 38 percent failure rate when handling irregular objects — 76 times higher than professional workers — and most robots can only operate for 2 to 4 hours per charge while carrying loads of just 5 to 15 kilograms. A 500,000 yuan robot replacing a 100,000 yuan-per-year worker would need five years to break even, yet robot design life typically spans only 3 to 5 years.
Industry Perspectives on the Path Forward
Industry leaders are divided on how quickly home robots will arrive. UBTech, one of China’s most prominent humanoid robot companies, has adopted a pragmatic approach focused on emotional companionship first. CFO Zhang Ju argues that “if you define it as a tool… the technical difficulty is high. But if it first solves human emotional companionship needs, it’s relatively easier.” UBTech launched its U1 series in June 2026 at a starting price of 119,800 yuan, targeting home scenarios.
Shangpin Zhaipei Chairman Li Lianzhu believes 2026 marks the key year for humanoid robots transitioning from technology demonstration to household practical use. The home furnishing company is partnering with Qiyuan Robot to create “robot-friendly homes” designed to accommodate embodied intelligent assistants.
However, skepticism persists. UBS analyst Wang Feili cautioned that “even if many manufacturers rush to 10,000 units this year, humanoid robots may not truly reach the commercial inflection point.” Even TSMC Chairman Wei Zhejia, upon seeing Chinese robots “jumping around,” remarked that they were “useless, just looks good” — highlighting the persistent gap between performance and practical capability.
The Industrial-to-Home Progression
Most analysts agree that humanoid robots will follow a predictable progression: from industrial manufacturing to commercial B2B scenarios, and finally to home popularization. This trajectory is already visible in Hunan, where Zoomlion Heavy Industry has deployed dozens of humanoid robots in factory production lines for logistics, assembly, machining, and quality inspection, with plans to deploy 1,000 to 2,000 embodied intelligent robots over the next five years.
The “Vibrant China Research Tour,” organized by the Central Propaganda Department, showcases this industrial momentum as part of the 15th Five-Year Plan’s technology innovation themes. Hunan Province is implementing “AI+” action plans and “Smart Empowerment of 10,000 Enterprises” initiatives, with its 2026 government work report calling for national AI industry application pilot bases.
What to Watch For
Jiang Nan’s promise that service robots will “soon” enter homes should be understood in the context of an industry still finding its footing. While China’s manufacturing prowess and production capacity are undeniable, the journey from factory floor to living room involves solving fundamental challenges in dexterity, reliability, energy efficiency, and affordability.
The coming years will likely see continued progress on all fronts — improved robot hands, longer battery life, and more sophisticated AI that can navigate the chaos of everyday home environments. As prices gradually decline and capabilities expand, the first wave of home service robots may arrive sooner than skeptics predict, though likely in limited roles: companionship, simple chores, and educational assistance rather than full household management.
For now, the question is not whether service robots will enter Chinese homes, but when — and in what form. The answer will depend on how quickly the industry can bridge the gap between what robots can demonstrate in controlled settings and what they can reliably accomplish in the unpredictable reality of daily life.
