Chalet Fire Victim in Grobbendonk Likely 55-Year-Old Owner

The fatal victim of a devastating chalet fire in Grobbendonk, Belgium, is most likely the 55-year-old owner and resident of one of the destroyed properties, according to the Antwerp public prosecutor’s office. Authorities continue to investigate the cause of the blaze, with arson among the scenarios under consideration.

The fire broke out in the early morning hours of Thursday, August 13, at camping De Kloek, located behind the indoor and outdoor playground of the same name in the Bouwel district of Grobbendonk. By the time firefighters arrived, the flames had already spread to a second chalet. Two chalets were completely destroyed, and a third was severely damaged.

Victim Identification

A body was discovered in one of the chalets at the end of firefighting operations. While strong indications point to the 55-year-old owner, full confirmation is still pending. “That must be determined by the dental examination,” said Kristof Aerts of the Antwerp public prosecutor’s office, as reported by VRT NWS. “But everything points to it being the 55-year-old resident and owner of one of the chalets.”

The Disaster Victim Identification (DVI) team of the Federal Police was deployed to assist with the identification process. The cause of death has been confirmed as resulting from the fire itself.

Investigation Into Possible Arson

The Antwerp prosecutor’s office has opened an investigation into possible intentional arson in an occupied building at night, with death as a result. Several indications of malicious intent have been noted, according to RTV.

The intensity and rapid spread of the fire have been flagged as notable characteristics. “It was a fierce, spreading fire, and that is striking,” Aerts said in earlier reporting by VRT NWS. “The fire expert has to work with the debris that remains. That is not easy.”

“The investigation into the cause is still ongoing,” Aerts added on Saturday. “The fire expert and the lab have been on site, but there is no clarity yet. Additional investigation will follow. Two scenarios remain on the table: an accidental fire or that something else happened.”

Firefighting Response and Evacuation

The fire brigade was called to the scene in the early morning. Code orange was declared due to the presence of many trees in the area, prompting additional resources to be dispatched. “The fire was under control after about an hour,” said Kristof Geens of Brandweer Zone Kempen, as reported by RTV. “Code orange still applies and there are many trees here, so we immediately called in extra pumpers and tankers.”

Approximately 20 to 25 camping guests were evacuated and taken to the canteen of the playground. The surrounding area has since been reopened, and evacuated residents have been able to return home.

Community Impact

The fire has deeply affected the local community. Neighbors described being woken by loud bangs and witnessing high flames. “I thought they were shooting in the woods,” said neighbor Maria, as reported by VRT NWS. “I went to look and then I saw there was a fire. It was quite frightening because the flames were high and our house is right behind it.”

Her husband Jack expressed concerns about the surrounding vegetation. “There are all these coniferous trees here,” he said. “If they catch fire and burning branches fall on your roof, it is immediately a sea of fire. We were lucky there was no wind.”

Grobbendonk Mayor Marianne Verhaert offered her condolences. “The news deeply affects me,” she said, according to RTV. “My thoughts go first to the family, friends, and loved ones of the victim. I wish them much strength in these incredibly difficult moments and ask everyone to respect their privacy.”

The investigation into the cause of the fire continues, with the fire expert and laboratory working to determine whether the blaze was accidental or intentional. The dental examination will provide definitive confirmation of the victim’s identity. An old friend of the victim had earlier expressed fears that the owner had perished in the fire, noting that his car was parked at the location and that he had been seen arriving on Wednesday evening, as reported by Transport Online and ZeelandNet.

If arson is confirmed, the case would carry severe penalties under Belgian law. Authorities have not yet provided a timeline for when the investigation may be concluded.
