NFL Suspends Falcons’ Pearce Jr. 8 Games After Arrest
The NFL has suspended Atlanta Falcons edge rusher James Pearce Jr. for the first eight games of the 2026 regular season for violating the league’s Personal Conduct Policy, the league announced Friday. The suspension stems from Pearce’s February arrest in Doral, Florida, following a domestic dispute with his ex-girlfriend, WNBA player Rickea Jackson.
The suspension takes effect on Sunday, August 30, coinciding with the NFL’s deadline for teams to reduce rosters to 53 players. Pearce will be eligible for reinstatement on November 2, following Atlanta’s Week 8 game at Tampa Bay. The Falcons travel to Madrid to face the Cincinnati Bengals the following week.
The Arrest and Legal Proceedings
Pearce was arrested on February 7 after police were summoned to investigate a reported domestic dispute. According to the police account, Jackson told authorities she attempted to drive away from Pearce and was heading toward the Doral police station for help when Pearce “intentionally collided into the rear of her vehicle with his SUV” before police arrived.
Prosecutors in Miami-Dade County brought three felony charges against Pearce: aggravated battery with a deadly weapon, fleeing and eluding police, and resisting an officer with violence. He also faced a misdemeanor charge of stalking. An additional charge of aggravated battery of an officer was dropped.
In April, Pearce entered a six-month pretrial intervention program that could result in all charges being dismissed if he meets all conditions, including random drug tests, staying away from Jackson, and avoiding legal trouble. The agreement includes no jail time and no admission of guilt.
Jackson, in a petition for protection filed in February, described a pattern of threatening behavior. “Due to his obsessive, insecure, violent and aggressive behavior, ending the relationship has been difficult and I am afraid for my life,” she said in the filing. “James has threatened to kill me, James has threatened to harm me, James has threatened to injure me, James has threatened to place a bag over my head, and James has verbally and physically abused.”
Pearce’s attorney, Jacob Nunez, said in February that his client “maintains his innocence and urges the public to understand that while allegations have the power to shape a narrative, that it is hardly the full, complete story.”
A Blow to Atlanta’s Pass Rush
The suspension compounds an already difficult situation for the Falcons’ defense. Jalon Walker, the team’s other first-round pick from 2025, tore his ACL in training camp on August 6 and will miss the entire season. The Falcons will begin 2026 without both of their top young pass rushers.
Pearce, 22, was selected by Atlanta with the No. 26 overall pick in the 2025 NFL Draft after the team traded back into the first round. He was an AP NFL Defensive Rookie of the Year finalist after recording 10.5 sacks, 26 tackles, 16 quarterback hits, and a franchise rookie record 45 quarterback pressures.
The Falcons have brought in veteran reinforcements, including Azeez Ojulari, Samson Ebukam, and Cameron Thomas, and signed Cameron Sample after Walker’s injury. Head coach Kevin Stefanski expressed confidence in the group’s ability to step up.
“We trust we have the guys to step up,” Stefanski said. “We were anticipating the suspension, so we have been pretty intentional about how we’ve planned it.”
League Discipline and Broader Context
The NFL’s Personal Conduct Policy allows the league to discipline players independently of the criminal justice system. The eight-game suspension exceeds the six-game baseline established for first-time domestic violence offenses following the 2014 Ray Rice incident, reflecting the severity of the alleged conduct.
Pearce was one of four players suspended by the NFL on Friday. The league also suspended Washington Commanders edge rusher Dorance Armstrong (one game, personal conduct), Tennessee Titans safety Nazeeh Johnson (six games, performance-enhancers), and Buffalo Bills defensive tackle Phidarian Mathis (three games, substances of abuse), according to CBS Sports.
What’s Next
Pearce will be allowed to participate in preseason games and team activities until his suspension takes effect on August 30. He will miss matchups against the Pittsburgh Steelers, Carolina Panthers, Green Bay Packers, New Orleans Saints, Baltimore Ravens, Chicago Bears, San Francisco 49ers, and Tampa Bay Buccaneers.
“James continues to do everything in his power to be a great teammate and works very hard on himself, in the building and outside the building,” Stefanski said. “He’ll continue to work, continue to play in these (preseason) games. Then, when the suspension takes place, he will be away from the building for the prescribed amount of time.”
The Falcons’ official announcement confirmed the suspension details, while the league’s NFL.com noted Pearce will be eligible to return for Week 9 in Madrid. Whether the Falcons can maintain their pass-rush production without their two young stars remains one of the defining questions of their 2026 season.
