Adam Driver, Inde Navarrette Join Marvel’s ‘X-Men’ Reboot Cast
ANAHEIM, Calif. — Marvel Studios unveiled the core cast for its long-awaited ‘X-Men’ reboot at Disney’s D23 convention Friday night, with Adam Driver set to play the villainous Mister Sinister and ‘Obsession’ breakout star Inde Navarrette cast as Rogue. The announcement, made by Marvel Studios President Kevin Feige at the Honda Center arena, also confirmed Christopher Abbott as Professor Charles Xavier and Maya Boyd as Storm, with the film slated for a May 5, 2028 release.
The announcements were the biggest news to emerge from Disney Entertainment’s D23 presentation, according to AP News. Driver’s casting marks his long-anticipated entry into the Marvel Cinematic Universe, ending years of speculation about which role the ‘Star Wars’ and ‘Marriage Story’ actor would take on.
Driver’s Reveal and the Full Cast
Driver appeared via video screen while the rest of the cast took the stage, and his reveal included a playful misdirect. “Kevin and I had been talking for years about my joining the Marvel Cinematic Universe, and I think we finally found the perfect film,” Driver told the crowd of 12,000. “So I’m very excited to be playing the role of Maaagneto!” he said before pausing and correcting himself: “even better, Nathaniel Millbury” — an alias for Mister Sinister.
Mister Sinister, created by legendary writer Chris Claremont, first appeared in X-Men comics in 1987. The character began as Nathaniel Essex, an obsessive geneticist born in the 1800s whose cruel experiments led him to discover mutant genes. He is widely considered the most prolific X-Men villain who had not yet appeared in live action.
Also on stage were previously announced cast members Samara Weaving as Emma Frost, Kit Connor as Scott “Cyclops” Summers, and Sadie Sink as Jean Grey, whose role was revealed by her appearance in this summer’s Marvel megahit ‘Spider-Man: Brand New Day.’ Feige noted that the cast members had just met backstage for the first time, as reported by Deadline.
Navarrette had been heavily rumored for a role after fast becoming one of Hollywood’s most sought-after actors for her striking performance in the indie horror hit ‘Obsession’ earlier this year. The Mexican-Australian actress, born in 2001, previously appeared in ‘Superman & Lois’ and ‘13 Reasons Why.‘
A New Era for the Mutants
The ‘X-Men’ joining the MCU became possible with Disney’s 2019 acquisition of Fox’s film studio. This will be the first standalone X-Men film since Fox’s ‘Dark Phoenix’ (2019) and the spinoff ‘New Mutants’ (2020) ended the previous franchise era, as Variety noted.
Director Jake Schreier is heading the reboot, with ‘Beef’ creator Lee Sung Jin and ‘The Bear’ co-showrunner Joanna Calo writing the script. The project gained momentum last spring when Schreier was tapped to direct, following his work on ‘Thunderbolts*’.
The mutants have been gradually re-integrated into the MCU through various projects. Patrick Stewart reprised Professor X in ‘Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness,’ Kelsey Grammer appeared as Beast in ‘The Marvels,’ and Channing Tatum’s Gambit debuted in ‘Deadpool & Wolverine.’ The animated series ‘X-Men ‘97’ on Disney+ has also helped build mutant presence in the franchise.
What’s Next for the X-Men
Before the standalone reboot arrives, several former Fox X-Men stars are set to return in ‘Avengers: Doomsday,’ scheduled for December 18. Stewart, Grammer, Ian McKellen as Magneto, James Marsden as Cyclops, Alan Cumming as Nightcrawler, Rebecca Romijn as Mystique, and Tatum’s Gambit will all appear in the team-up film, according to Variety’s release date coverage.
Fan reactions to the casting have been mixed but largely enthusiastic. Some expressed surprise at Abbott’s casting as Professor X, with one commenter noting, “I like Christopher Abbott but I’m not going to lie I said ‘What!?’ It’s truly left field for me.” Others questioned Navarrette’s casting as Rogue, though many pointed out that Marvel could use wigs or hair dye to match the character’s iconic look.
