Beijing Hosts 2,056 Humanoid Robots at World Robot Games

Beijing is set to host the second World Humanoid Robot Games from August 22-26 at the National Speed Skating Oval “Ice Ribbon,” bringing together 666 teams and 2,056 humanoid robots from 16 countries across six continents. The event, co-organized by the Beijing Municipal Government and China Media Group, marks a dramatic expansion from the inaugural edition, with team numbers surging 138 percent and robot participation quadrupling, according to People’s Daily.

From 26 to 51 Events: A Rapidly Growing Competition

The competition program has expanded from 26 events in 2025 to 51 this year—comprising 30 competitive events and 21 scenario-based challenges—totaling 1,301 matches, up from 487 in the first edition. The competition period has been extended from three to five days, with events scheduled in afternoon and evening slots. New competitive disciplines include long jump, weightlifting, tug-of-war, table tennis, martial arts, and sports dance, while football has added a new 3V3 U19 category, as ITHome reported.

The expanded format reflects a deliberate strategy to push humanoid robots to their physical limits. This April, the Beijing Yizhuang Humanoid Robot Half-Marathon champion finished in 50 minutes 26 seconds—surpassing the human world record—demonstrating the rapid pace of technological advancement. The new high-intensity events are designed to test robot brains, bodies, and core components under extreme conditions.

Global Participation and Domestic Firepower

International teams from the United States, Germany, Japan, and other countries are competing, with Brazil assembling a national squad from five robot football World Cup teams. Domestically, 157 enterprises and 200 universities and research institutions are fielding 641 teams with 1,975 robots, including industry leaders Unitree, UBTech, Xiaomi, and Fourier Intelligence, alongside elite institutions such as Tsinghua, Peking, Shanghai Jiao Tong, and Zhejiang universities, China Daily reported.

The international dimension has grown significantly. The first edition in August 2025 attracted 280 teams from 16 countries and established the “Ice Ribbon” as the world’s first comprehensive sports venue dedicated to humanoid robot competition. The 2026 edition has nearly tripled that scale, with 223 referees selected—including 28 international-level officials—up 100 from the previous year.

The “Robot Village”: A Home for Mechanical Athletes

Behind the scenes, organizers have created a dedicated “Robot Village” near the competition venues to support the needs of these unusual athletes. The facility features a digital management system with “one robot one code” tracking, 200 charging cabinets supporting more than 1,200 batteries simultaneously, three public and 26 dedicated storage areas, and 24 repair stations, according to ITHome’s report on the village’s operations.

An embodied intelligence management platform monitors joint temperatures, movement status, and battery levels for all 666 teams and 2,056 robots in real time via encrypted dedicated communication links. “This platform can manage robots across brands and models,” an organizing committee official told People’s Daily. “The goal is to achieve breakthroughs in key technologies and key areas, ultimately better promoting humanoid robots into human production and daily life.”

Real-World Scenarios: Testing Robots in Hotels and Homes

One of the most significant innovations this year is the expansion of scenario-based competitions into real-world environments. The hotel guest service competition, held August 16-17 at Beijing’s Wuzhou Grand Hotel, saw more than 10 robot teams tackle luggage handling, room restocking, and bed-making within a 30-minute window, as Beijing Time reported.

“This hotel scenario competition connects the competition venue with industrial application scenarios, focusing on testing humanoid robots’ practical capabilities in real commercial service environments,” said Li Ziye, the hotel scenario competition’s guest service post lead. “We hope to shorten the cycle from laboratory to commercial application through competition testing and screening.”

The challenges are substantial. “There is a big difference between real scenarios and constructed scenarios,” said Zhang Yizhuo, a contestant from the Renmin University of China-Beijing Humanoid Joint Team. “The hotel corridors are narrow, testing how robots can move forward and backward freely during transport.”

Wang Fan, hotel competition lead at Beichen Group, noted that as humanoid robots improve at mechanical, process-oriented services, hotel operational efficiency will further increase. The venue has already deployed delivery robots, smart storage cabinets, and AI-powered switchboard systems, with plans to expand robot services to luggage handling, guest interaction, and coffee preparation.

From Competition to Commercialization

The games serve a broader industrial purpose beyond sport. Organizers aim to use competition rules as a foundation for technical acceptance standards—a strategy described as “setting standards through competition, promoting production through standards.”

“If robots master these ‘last meter’ skills, they can win medals and get orders, leave the arena and enter the field,” said Jiang Guangzhi, executive deputy director of the games’ organizing committee and director of the Beijing Municipal Bureau of Economy and Information Technology.

Industry insiders see 2026 as a pivotal year for humanoid robotics. “2025 is the first year of mass production for humanoid robots, and 2026 is the first year of mass production for operational intelligence,” said Zhang Yufeng, founder and CEO of Wujie Dongli, an AI brain developer. “This year we will see a 0-to-1 breakthrough, with robots truly beginning to land in industrial and commercial scenarios.”

Tan Peng, board secretary of joint module manufacturer Zhuoyu Ruichuang, highlighted the industry’s rapid consolidation: “In 2024 and 2025, everyone was pursuing highly customized products, making only 10, 30, or 50 units for proof-of-concept applications. But this year, there are 10-20 customers with procurement scales of over 1,000 units for the same model.” The company, which has achieved full in-house development of motors, reducers, drives, and encoders, now has an annual production capacity of 300,000 units, as Beijing Time’s industry report detailed.

Challenges Remain: The Gap Between Lab and Reality

Despite rapid progress, significant challenges persist. “Current data is extremely scarce,” said Li Yao, vice president and partner of Noitom Robotics, a motion capture and data company. “The simplest task of moving a cup from point A to point B—many robots do well in such experiments. But when it truly goes to real scenarios, when the scene generalizes, lighting generalizes, manipulated objects generalize, and various unexpected situations occur, the task completion rate still has some issues.”

These challenges underscore the importance of events like the World Humanoid Robot Games as testing grounds. The Beijing Economic-Technological Development Area, also known as Yizhuang, has built a comprehensive robot ecosystem including a 4,000-square-meter Robot Mall showcasing more than 100 robot products, which has attracted over 100,000 visitors and generated sales exceeding 60 million yuan, according to China Youth Daily.

A Permanent Legacy

Following the games, the “Ice Ribbon” will be converted into a permanent training base for robot teams, open for visits and educational programs to enhance public understanding of embodied intelligence. The Lianhe Zaobao reported that the venue will continue serving as a hub for robotics development.

The games coincide with the 2026 World Robot Conference, which opened August 19 at Yizhuang under the theme “Human-Machine Symbiosis, Production-Demand Integration,” featuring more than 100 global debut products. Together, these events underscore China’s ambition to lead the global humanoid robotics industry—from research and development to manufacturing and real-world deployment.

As Sina News noted, the competition features a new “comprehensive pentathlon” that combines sprint racing with scenario tasks, requiring robots to perform dexterous operations while running at speed—a fitting metaphor for an industry racing toward practical applications. The question now is whether these mechanical athletes can translate their on-field performances into real-world utility, and how quickly the gap between laboratory capability and commercial reliability can be closed.
