China’s robot industry enterprises above designated size achieved revenue of 165.5 billion yuan in the first half of 2026, representing a year-on-year growth of 24.5%, according to data released at the opening of the 2026 World Robot Conference in Beijing on August 19. The figures, reported by Xinhua News, underscore the sector’s robust momentum as China continues to cement its position as the world’s largest industrial robot market for a 13th consecutive year.
A Decade of Unprecedented Growth
The first-half revenue builds on a trajectory that has seen the industry expand at an average annual rate exceeding 20 percent over the past five years. In 2025, robot industry enterprises above designated size generated revenue surpassing 300 billion yuan, according to Economic Daily.
China’s dominance in the global robotics landscape is further underscored by data from the International Federation of Robotics (IFR), which recorded approximately 295,000 industrial robot installations in China in 2024—accounting for 54 percent of the global total. Domestic brand industrial robots have now surpassed 50 percent market share in the domestic market, a milestone reflecting the sector’s maturation from import-dependent to self-sufficient.
World Robot Conference 2026: From Showcase to Marketplace
The 2026 World Robot Conference, themed “Human-Machine Symbiosis, Production-Demand Integration,” opened on August 19 at the Beijing Economic-Technological Development Area (Yizhuang) and runs through August 23. The event has attracted 373 domestic and international enterprises, featuring 3,000 innovative products, with 311 new products making their debut, according to Science and Technology Daily.
This year’s conference marks a notable shift in focus. Industry observers note that the event has evolved from a technology showcase into a marketplace where real-world applications take center stage. The conference has for the first time established a “Procurement Day” to facilitate business matching, reflecting a broader industry transformation from demonstration to mass production and delivery.
Policy Push for Intelligent Robotics
At the conference’s opening, Xin Guobin, Vice Minister of the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology (MIIT), outlined the government’s strategic direction for the sector. “We will take intelligence as the main line and practicality as the guide, coordinating technological breakthroughs, industrial cultivation, scenario expansion, and safety governance to promote innovative development of the robot industry,” Xin said.
The MIIT plans to focus on core components and embodied intelligence as key areas, building a batch of advanced, practical, and easy-to-use intelligent robot signature products. Application priorities include agriculture, healthcare, elderly care, and emergency response—sectors with broad application space and strong demonstration effects.
Beijing Mayor Yin Yong highlighted the capital’s commitment to demonstration applications, noting that Beijing is implementing a demonstration project of 100 quality products in 100 scenarios, with 354 products already deployed across 289 scenarios in industrial manufacturing, medical and elderly care, and urban services.
Industry Transformation Underway
The conference’s exhibits reveal a sector in transition. Companies are increasingly emphasizing commercial delivery in real-world scenarios rather than flashy demonstrations. UBTECH, a leading humanoid robot manufacturer, stated that “in 2026, the humanoid robot industry has bid farewell to conceptual exploration and entered a new stage of scenario-based, practical, and scaled development.”
Data from Tianyancha shows China now has over 1.165 million enterprises in the robot industry chain, with approximately 144,000 newly added this year. Notably, new enterprises are increasingly focused on algorithm R&D, system integration, scenario solutions, software platforms, and engineering services rather than just complete machine manufacturing—signaling deeper integration of robotics with AI, software, and automation systems.
Global Implications and Challenges Ahead
The growth of China’s robot industry carries significant international implications. South African media outlet Independent Online noted that China’s robot industry development provides important opportunities for African countries in agriculture, healthcare, mining, and manufacturing, as reported by Xinhua via 163.com.
However, industry leaders acknowledge persistent challenges. Xu Xiaolan, Chairperson of the Chinese Institute of Electronics, noted that “embodied intelligence products are at a critical juncture transitioning from small-batch trials to large-scale deployment.” The gap between “being able to perform” and “being able to work” remains a key engineering challenge, with intelligence levels and skill-based operation capabilities still requiring improvement.
