Pukkelpop 2026 Opens: Campers Arrive, Royal Blood Surprise, Economic Boost for Limburg
The 41st edition of Pukkelpop officially kicked off Thursday morning as the first campers streamed through the gates at the festival grounds in Kiewit, Hasselt. The sold-out festival, one of Europe’s premier music events, runs from August 20-23 with approximately 66,000 visitors expected daily, according to VRT NWS.
Campers Race for Prime Spots
Camping gates opened early Thursday morning, but many festival-goers arrived hours before to secure prime spots. A group of girls from Bonheiden told VRT NWS they got up at quarter past five to make the journey. “We hope to find a good spot on the campsite,” they said. “We plan to set up our tents and then try to get some more sleep.”
Thibo and Thibaut from Genk, attending their third Pukkelpop, came prepared with a handcart for their gear. “This is our 3rd Pukkelpop, so we know what works by now,” they said. “That’s why we’re here so early. Better early than late!”
Others came with even more ambitious plans. Rafael and Louis brought approximately 112 cans of half-liter Cara pils along with a cooler they plan to keep stocked with ice for the full four days. “That way we’ll hopefully survive the weekend,” they joked.
Royal Blood Surprise Set Confirmed
Festival organizers confirmed that British rock duo Royal Blood will play a surprise concert on Friday in the Marquee tent. The slot at 17:00 had been kept open in the lineup, fueling speculation about a mystery act. The Brighton-based band, known for hits like “Out of the Black” and “Figure It Out,” previously played Pukkelpop in 2024 as a surprise replacement for Queens of the Stone Age as festival closer.
The surprise announcement is one of several last-minute lineup changes. American DJ John Summit cancelled his Friday appearance due to unforeseen circumstances, with Diplo stepping in as replacement, as RTBF reported. Diplo will now perform twice on Friday—once with Major Lazer on the Main Stage and again as a solo DJ set in the Boiler.
Friday headliner Yungblud is also facing challenges. The 29-year-old British singer revealed on Instagram that he has a leg injury and is using crutches, but confirmed he will still perform. “Leg is done for, but I’m still performing,” he wrote. “I’m coming and it will be insane,” as VRT NWS reported.
Economic Impact: Tens of Millions for Limburg
Beyond the music, new data reveals Pukkelpop is a significant economic engine for the Limburg region. According to calculations by Voka - KvK Limburg, the festival generates tens of millions of euros in added value for the province, as reported by VRT NWS.
“Tens of thousands of visitors spend money, thousands of people are working, and a whole chain of entrepreneurs and self-employed people is involved,” said Dario D’Arpino of Voka. The economic benefit comes primarily from businesses that carry out additional activities through the festival, including hospitality, transport, and many other sectors.
D’Arpino noted that significantly more businesses are now active in and around the festival compared to ten years ago. “If you compare Pukkelpop to ten years ago, there are now many more businesses active in and around the festival,” he said. “It’s more than just a music festival.”
The festival also serves as a springboard for new companies. Hasselt-based The Safe Group, which develops crowd management software, gained international visibility and credibility through its work at Pukkelpop.
A Festival with Deep Roots
Founded in 1985 by the Humanistische Jongeren van Leopoldsburg, Pukkelpop has grown from a small one-day event into one of Europe’s most important music festivals, according to Wikipedia. The festival takes its name from “De Pukkel,” the youth center where it originated. Over four decades, it has earned a reputation for discovering artists early—Nirvana, Amy Winehouse, Foo Fighters, Billie Eilish, and Dua Lipa all played Pukkelpop in their early days.
