China’s Largest Auto Recall: 4.27 Million Vehicles Recalled
China’s State Administration for Market Regulation (SAMR) announced on August 21 a massive coordinated recall involving nine automakers and more than 4.27 million vehicles, making it the largest automotive recall in China this year. The recalls stem from safety concerns about in-car emergency mechanical handles that are difficult to identify and operate because their color closely matches interior trim, according to Xinhua News.
In extreme scenarios such as severe collisions causing the vehicle’s low-voltage electrical system to fail, this could impede occupants from quickly opening doors to escape and hinder external rescue efforts, the regulator said.
The Scale of the Recall
The coordinated action spans nine automakers — from traditional manufacturers like FAW and Dongfeng to new energy startups including Xiaomi, Leapmotor, and XPeng, as well as foreign brand Tesla. The affected vehicles were produced between August 2018 and July 2026, reflecting the breadth of the issue across China’s rapidly evolving automotive market.
Tesla accounts for the largest share of the recall, with approximately 2.976 million vehicles affected — about 69 percent of the total. The recall covers domestic Model 3 and Model Y vehicles as well as imported Model 3, Model X, and Model S models, as reported by Caixin.
In a separate but related action, Tesla also recalled an additional 2,740,642 vehicles over insufficient driver attention monitoring in assisted driving mode, according to China News Service.
Other affected automakers include Xiaomi Automobile (390,435 SU7 vehicles), Leapmotor (371,200 C01 and C11 models), XPeng (264,842 G6, P7+, and X9 vehicles), Geely’s Zeekr brand (92,658 vehicles), Chery (68,488 vehicles), Dongfeng Motor (53,452 vehicles), BAIC BluePark Magna (46,850 vehicles), and FAW (11,908 vehicles).
The Core Defect
The recalls center on a design issue that has become increasingly prevalent in modern electric vehicles: hidden or flush-mounted door handles. These handles, which sit flush with the vehicle body when not in use, reduce aerodynamic drag and enhance design aesthetics. Tesla pioneered this design in mass-produced vehicles, and many Chinese EV makers followed suit.
However, the SAMR identified a specific safety concern: the in-car emergency mechanical handles are similar in color to the interior trim, making them difficult to identify and operate. In the event of a severe collision causing the vehicle’s low-voltage system to fail, occupants may be unable to quickly open doors to escape, and external rescuers may face significant difficulties.
The Xiaomi Chengdu Accident Catalyst
The recalls follow a tragic incident in October 2025 when a Xiaomi SU7 Ultra crashed on Chengdu’s Tianfu Avenue at 167 km/h — more than double the 80 km/h speed limit. The forensic report revealed that the collision caused the battery to short-circuit, sending high-voltage current into the low-voltage circuit and causing complete failure of the vehicle’s electrical system. The vehicle’s exterior door handles were electronic release buttons without external mechanical handles, and doors could not be opened from outside during rescue attempts. The driver died from fire, not collision impact, according to Gasgoo.
The driver was found to have been drunk driving and severely speeding, bearing full responsibility for the accident. However, the driver’s family disputed this conclusion, arguing that the vehicle’s design contributed to the death.
Remedies and Corrective Actions
The primary remedy across all nine automakers is the free installation of warning labels on emergency mechanical handles. Several automakers are also going further:
- Tesla, Leapmotor, Geely, and Dongfeng are upgrading window control software via over-the-air (OTA) updates to add post-crash window lowering functions, which could provide an additional escape route in emergencies.
- Xiaomi is optimizing central control unlocking logic and window lowering strategies through OTA software upgrades.
- Chery is replacing emergency handle cover plates with improved versions featuring clearer markings.
- BAIC BluePark Magna is replacing emergency handle cover plates with text warning labels and adding post-crash window lowering via OTA.
Regulatory Evolution and New Safety Standards
The recalls come amid a significant tightening of China’s automotive safety regulations. In January 2026, the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology released the mandatory national standard GB 48001-2026, “Technical Requirements for Automobile Door Handle Safety,” which takes effect on January 1, 2027. The standard requires every door (excluding the tailgate) to have a mechanical release exterior door handle and at least one mechanical release interior handle, with permanent markings that are clearly visible and unobstructed.
Additionally, two new mandatory EV safety standards took effect on July 1, 2026: GB 18384-2025 requires physical disconnection between high-voltage circuits and rechargeable energy storage systems, while GB 38031-2025 upgrades battery thermal diffusion testing from a “5-minute warning before fire/explosion” to “no fire, no explosion” requirements.
Some new models, including the AITO M9, Li Auto L9, and the new Xiaomi SU7, have already adapted to the new standards, according to ITHome.

The coordinated recall represents a significant shift in China’s approach to automotive safety regulation — moving from reactive to proactive enforcement. As Sina News noted, this is the largest, most extensive, and most numerous automotive product recall this year.
