China’s Robot Workforce: From Coffee Shops to Factory Floors
At the 2026 World Robot Conference in Beijing, the robots on display are no longer just performing tricks for audiences. They are folding clothes, making coffee, sorting packages, and calibrating precision instruments - signaling a significant shift in China’s automation landscape as robots transition from “performance guests” to genuine “office workers.”
The conference, held August 19-23 at the Etrong International Exhibition and Convention Center in Beijing’s Yizhuang (E-Town) district under the theme “Human-Robot Symbiosis, Production-Demand Integration,” features nearly 50,000 square meters of exhibition space with 373 domestic and international companies showcasing 3,000 innovative products, including 311 new product debuts. Exhibitor numbers grew 36 percent year-over-year, according to Xinhua News.
From Demonstrations to Real Work
This year’s conference marks a turning point in how robots are being deployed. In a robot coffee shop at the venue, two K15 robots from Wujie Dongli navigate between tables, delivering coffee while avoiding pedestrians, collecting trash, and disinfecting surfaces.
“This is our human-machine symbiotic immersive robot coffee space, designed to validate robots’ physical cognition and dynamic generalization capabilities in open commercial scenarios that integrate real customer flow, real-time demands, and continuous tasks,” said Zhang Yufeng, founder and CEO of Wujie Dongli. He noted that “currently, embodied intelligence capabilities are roughly between the toddler and adolescent stages, requiring repeated validation and continuous improvement in real-world scenarios.”
The shift extends well beyond coffee service. At the Beijing Humanoid Robot Innovation Center exhibit, a calibration robot for infrared thermometers demonstrated its ability to work in dark conditions around the clock. “Every year, millions of infrared thermometers are sent to metrology laboratories for calibration - this work is tedious and highly repetitive,” a staff member explained. “The robot’s advantages are significant - it can operate 7x24 hours continuously in dark conditions. Its daily calibration capacity is over 3 times that of humans, with standard deviation reduced by about 40 percent.”
In logistics, Xingdong Jiyuan’s sorting robots are handling packages of varying sizes, softness, and materials on conveyor belts. “Traditional mechanical grippers can only handle a few regular-shaped items and cannot cope with random incoming packages, which is why robots with dexterous hands are needed,” said Xi Yue, co-founder of Xingdong Jiyuan. The company has deployed robots in over 10 logistics centers across China, with clients including China Post and SF Express, achieving sorting efficiency of 90 percent of human levels with 24-hour stable operation, as Beijing News reported.
Robots in Daily Life
Beyond industrial applications, robots are entering everyday consumer spaces. Galaxy General Robotics’ Galbot G1 robot has entered a FamilyMart convenience store in Beijing’s Zhongguancun district, marking the world’s first regular deployment of an embodied intelligence robot in a chain convenience store. “Convenience stores are typical unstructured environments with dynamic customer flow, diverse product categories, and constantly switching tasks,” said Zhang Zhizheng, co-founder of Galaxy General Robotics. “Such scenarios have long been considered high-difficulty areas where robots struggle to work stably.”
In the food service sector, the Robot Flame Research Institute 2.0 in Beijing Yizhuang features nearly 20 robots of different forms working together, with a “robot chef” capable of cooking about 50 classic Chinese dishes with precision to 0.1 grams per seasoning. Meanwhile, JD’s 7FRESH smart unmanned coffee shop in Beijing Galaxy SOHO, which opened August 16, set a Guinness World Record by producing 202 cups of coffee in one hour, with single cup production time under 30 seconds, as China Youth Online reported.
A Landmark IPO and Investor Confidence
The robotics sector’s momentum was underscored on August 19 when Unitree Robotics went public on the STAR Market, China’s Nasdaq equivalent. Shares surged over 460 percent on the first trading day, from an IPO price of 150.80 yuan to a closing price of 845 yuan. Unitree shipped over 5,500 humanoid robots in 2025, achieving 278 million yuan net profit, making it one of the few profitable companies in the sector, according to BBC Chinese.
Wang Xingxing, founder of Unitree Technology, said at the conference: “I believe the next decade will be a completely new starting point. Especially at this time of AI explosion and extremely high global attention, the evolution speed of robots has greatly accelerated, and future development may be even faster than predicted.” He previously predicted at the World Internet Conference that the “ChatGPT moment” for embodied intelligence could arrive within 2-3 years, when robots will be able to work directly in most unfamiliar scenarios.
Beijing’s Robotics Ecosystem
Beijing is positioning itself as a global robotics innovation hub. The city’s Yizhuang district has gathered over 300 robotics and embodied intelligence ecosystem enterprises, with an industry chain scale exceeding 20 billion yuan. In the first half of 2026, Beijing’s key humanoid robot manufacturers produced nearly 6,000 units, nearly 10 times growth year-over-year, according to the Beijing Economic-Technological Development Area.
At the conference, Beijing Yizhuang unveiled its “Robot World 3.0” initiative, planning a city-level testing ground for embodied intelligence with 12 square kilometers of “Beijing Machine Domain” and 3 million square meters of industrial space. The district aims to create 100 practical robot products applied in 1,000 niche fields, achieve mass production of 100,000 sets of embodied intelligence robots, and form production capacity for 1 million key core components.
The 2026 E-Town Robot Consumption Festival, launched alongside the conference, adds 9,600 square meters of robot consumption streets. Last year’s festival achieved sales exceeding 330 million yuan, selling over 190,000 robots and related products, as Economic Daily reported.
Labor Market Implications and Strategic Context
Robots are increasingly positioned as a solution to China’s demographic challenges. As the population ages and labor shortages emerge, robots are seen as a way to fill gaps in the workforce. Dr. Qin Fei, associate professor at the University of Bath, noted that “robots are also seen as a potential solution to China’s aging population problem, as demographic changes are expected to lead to labor shortages. Beijing views the robot industry as a strategic priority for achieving leadership in advanced technology.”
The geopolitical dimension adds further significance. In July 2026, the Trump administration banned new Chinese humanoid and quadruped robots from entering the US market, citing national security concerns. Beijing denied the claims and accused Washington of politicizing trade issues, as BBC Chinese reported.
What’s Next
Industry leaders are optimistic about the pace of development. The CLS report from the conference noted that robots are increasingly being designed for specific tasks rather than simply mimicking human form - from 4-meter superhumanoids for extreme environments to centaur-style wheeled-legged robots for industrial settings.
Mayor of Beijing Yin Yong said at the opening ceremony that “robot technology is an important representative of new quality productive forces and is changing the way humans produce and live. Beijing insists on making robots a key cultivation direction for high-precision industries… accelerating the creation of a globally influential robot innovation hub.”
As the World Robot Conference continues through August 23, the message from Beijing is clear: China’s robots are no longer just for show. They are clocking in for work - and reshaping the country’s economic and technological landscape in the process. The question now is not whether robots will join the workforce, but how quickly and in what numbers they will transform it.
