Harry and Meghan’s Hollywood Dreams Fade as They Head Home
Prince Harry and Meghan Markle are preparing to leave California and return to the United Kingdom after six years, marking the end of a Hollywood chapter that began with $100 million deals and A-list ambitions but ends with faded star power, mounting legal bills, and a floundering production career. The couple, along with their children Prince Archie, 7, and Princess Lilibet, 5, are expected to relocate this month, with the children starting school in Britain in September, according to USA Today.
The Hollywood Dream That Faded
When the Duke and Duchess of Sussex stepped down from royal duties in January 2020, they arrived in California with ambitions of building a media empire. Their five-year, $100 million production deal with Netflix was announced in September 2020, followed by a multi-year podcast deal with Spotify reportedly worth $20-25 million. Forbes reported that Netflix did not renew the deal when it expired in September 2025, replacing it with a smaller “first look” arrangement.
The Spotify partnership ended in 2023 by “mutual consent” after producing only Meghan’s 12-episode podcast “Archetypes.” The couple’s subsequent Netflix projects — “Live to Lead,” “Polo,” “Heart of Invictus,” and “With Love, Meghan” — performed progressively worse, according to The Guardian.
Their latest producing attempt, a Girl Scouts documentary called “Cookie Queens,” opened to between $328,000 and $354,000 at the box office, trailing “CatVideoFest 2026,” a compilation of cat videos playing in a third as many theaters, as Page Six reported.
A Costly California Life
The couple’s Montecito estate, purchased for $14.65 million in June 2020 through their company Rockbridge LLC, carries a heavy financial burden. The property costs over $600,000 a year in mortgage payments and taxes alone, according to the New York Post. The mortgage is a $9.52 million adjustable-rate loan starting at 2.49% and capable of climbing to 7.49% after July 2030. The couple has paid roughly $721,000 in property taxes since 2021, with the 2025 bill at $149,668.
Real estate sources in Santa Barbara say there have been “rumblings” the couple may eventually list the property, despite their public statements that they intend to keep it. One broker noted that “every broker wants that listing.”

Harry’s legal battles have also taken a toll. In July, he and six other claimants lost their privacy lawsuit against the Daily Mail’s publisher, Associated Newspapers. On August 21, they were ordered to pay £9.54 million (approximately €11 million) as an initial payment toward the publisher’s legal costs, with the final bill potentially reaching £50 million, as Euronews reported.
Meghan’s lifestyle brand “As Ever” (rebranded from American Riviera Orchard) has faced significant challenges, including a reported 650,000 unsold units in inventory and an estimated $5 million potential write-off on unsold jam. The brand also lost its Netflix partnership after seven months.
Industry insiders describe a couple who alienated former allies and burned bridges. Meghan was reportedly dropped by WME talent agency, with insiders saying she was “too demanding” and “difficult to work with.” A showbiz insider told Page Six: “Good riddance to them… they have squandered all chances of making money here.”
The Security Question
Harry has long cited security concerns as a reason for not bringing his family back to Britain. After stepping back from royal duties, he lost his taxpayer-funded police protection and subsequently lost a legal challenge over security arrangements in May 2025. In a BBC interview last year, he said: “I can’t see a world in which I would be bringing my wife and children back to the U.K. at this point… I miss the UK. And it’s really quite sad I won’t be able to show my children my homeland.”
In a July 2024 ITV documentary, he elaborated on the danger he perceives: “It’s still dangerous and all it takes is one lone actor, one person who reads this stuff, to act on what they have read – and whether it’s a knife or acid or whatever it is… these are things that are a genuine concern for me.”
