China’s Robotics Industry Surges at World-Class Conferences

Beijing played host to two world-class robotics events this week, offering a vivid demonstration of China’s accelerating robotics industry. The Second World Humanoid Robot Games opened August 22 at the National Speed Skating Oval (the “Ice Ribbon”), while the 2026 World Robot Conference (WRC) wrapped up August 23 at Beijing E-Town, together showcasing how Chinese robotics has moved from laboratory demonstrations to real-world deployment at scale.

The twin events come at a moment of extraordinary momentum for the sector. According to Xinhua News, China’s robotics industry enterprises above designated size achieved operating revenue exceeding 300 billion yuan in 2025, with average annual growth of over 20 percent in the past five years. In the first half of 2026, revenue reached 165.5 billion yuan, up 24.5 percent year-on-year.

Record-Breaking Performances on the Track

The Humanoid Robot Games drew 666 teams from 16 countries across six continents, with 2,056 robots competing—a 138 percent increase in teams and a fourfold increase in robots compared to the inaugural edition, as ITHome reported. Competition events expanded from 26 to 51, including 30 competitive events and 21 scenario-based events totaling 1,301 matches.

The athletic performances captured global attention. The Tiangong Ultra, developed by the Beijing Humanoid Robot Innovation Center, ran 100 meters in 9.39 seconds during preliminaries—breaking Usain Bolt’s 9.58-second human world record. The same robot also jumped 2.8843 meters in the standing high jump, far exceeding human records. Honor’s Lightning robot, which won the Beijing E-Town Humanoid Robot Half Marathon in April, tested at 9.32 seconds for 100 meters with a peak speed of 14.5 meters per second, according to ITHome.

“For every 1 centimeter improvement in high jump and every 1 kilogram increase in weightlifting, behind it are engineers’ continuous optimization and precision testing of joint motors and reducers,” said Jiang Guangzhi, director of the Beijing Municipal Bureau of Economy and Information Technology. “Once robots master these last-meter skills, they can win medals and get orders, leave the arena and enter the worksite.”

Industry Scaling at the World Robot Conference

At the WRC, which ran August 19-23 under the theme “Human-Robot Symbiosis, Production-Demand Integration,” more than 300 Chinese and foreign enterprises exhibited over 3,000 products across four exhibition halls spanning nearly 50,000 square meters. Exhibitor count grew 36 percent year-on-year, according to the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology.

A notable first: 48 central state-owned enterprises jointly exhibited at the WRC, showcasing full-chain layout capabilities from elements to complete machines, as 10jqka reported.

Beijing E-Town announced ambitious targets to create 100 deployable robot products, promote application in 1,000 niche fields, achieve mass production of 100,000-unit-scale embodied intelligent robots, and build production capacity for 1 million key core components, according to Yicai.

The Beijing Humanoid Robot Innovation Center released the lightweight humanoid robot Tiangong Omni at the WRC—1.35 meters tall and 39 kilograms—described as the world’s first Humanoid Native open base combining perception, mobility, and whole-body general control. As ITHome reported, CEO Xiong Youjun said the robot will focus on industrial scenarios and provide a standard platform for the industry, allowing other manufacturers to do secondary development.

Real-World Deployment Accelerates

The conferences highlighted a shift from demonstration to deployment. In Beijing, 72 robots have been deployed across 14 municipal parks, including the Summer Palace and Temple of Heaven, for cleaning, patrol, and public service tasks. Nearly 10 mainstream automakers including Xiaomi, BYD, SAIC, and FAW have begun deploying embodied intelligence verification on actual production lines, covering material handling and loading/unloading operations.

Industry investment reflects the sector’s explosive growth. In the first half of 2026, domestic embodied intelligence sector financing exceeded 93.5 billion yuan—five times the same period last year, as Jiemian News reported. Unitree Technology listed on the STAR Market on August 19, the opening day of the WRC, with market value briefly exceeding 400 billion yuan.

Global humanoid robot shipments in the first half of 2026 reached 19,100 units, up 272 percent year-on-year, with industrial and commercial applications accounting for over 70 percent of shipments, up from 50 percent a year ago, according to 10jqka. Industry data suggests China’s full-year humanoid robot production could exceed 100,000 units in 2026, as Qianlong reported.

Global Engagement and Recognition

The international dimension was prominent. Jack Perry, chairman of the UK 48 Group, observed: “I have attended many international robot industry conferences; they mostly talk about the future. Here I see changes that have already happened.”

The Global Robot Application Exploration Plan, launched August 20 by the World Robot Cooperation Organization and the China Electronics Society, will collect application scenario needs globally and select 1,000 scenarios annually for free robot trials and secondary development, according to Xinhua News.

Xu Xiaolan, chairman of the China Electronics Society, noted that the embodied intelligence industry has a strong driving capacity with a 1:10 multiplier effect. “Industry institutions generally predict the global humanoid robot market will maintain high-speed growth and become a new engine for global economic growth,” she said. “In the long run, humanoid robots are not just a single tech product, but intelligent infrastructure empowering all industries.”

Challenges Remain Despite Momentum

Despite the enthusiasm, industry leaders acknowledged persistent bottlenecks. Wang Xingxing, founder of Unitree Technology, said at the WRC main forum: “Why hasn’t it been promoted on a large scale yet? The main reason is insufficient efficiency and generalization. Robots can already do some simple assembly, but efficiency is lower than humans, and every new task requires retraining. This is a common bottleneck facing the world currently.”

Xiong Youjun acknowledged that the current return on investment for humanoid robots still lags industrial robots or human labor, though “this gap is narrowing very quickly.”

Beijing Mayor Yin Yong underscored the city’s ambitions: “Robot technology is an important representative of new quality productive forces and is changing the way humans produce and live. Beijing will accelerate building a globally influential robot innovation highland,” he said at the WRC opening, as reported by Beijing Government.

What to Watch

As the WRC concludes and the Humanoid Robot Games head toward finals on August 26, the industry’s trajectory is clear: China’s robotics sector is transitioning from exhibition showcases to industrial-scale deployment. The coming months will test whether the sector can overcome the generalization and cost challenges that remain, and whether the ambitious production targets translate into sustained commercial adoption across manufacturing, services, and daily life.
