China’s Robot Industry Surges at Two World-Class Conferences

Beijing played host to a landmark week for robotics in August 2026, as two world-class events showcased China’s rapidly maturing robot industry. The 2026 World Robot Conference (WRC), held August 19-23 at the North Ren International Convention Center in Beijing’s E-Town, and the Second World Humanoid Robot Games, which opened August 22 at the National Speed Skating Oval, together demonstrated how China’s robotics sector is accelerating from laboratory demonstrations toward large-scale real-world deployment.

Record-Breaking Performances

The most striking moment came at the Games’ opening, when the Tiangong Ultra humanoid robot from the Beijing Humanoid Robot Innovation Center ran 100 meters in 9.39 seconds, breaking Usain Bolt’s human world record of 9.58 seconds, as reported by BBC News. The Honor “Lightning” robot achieved an even faster 9.32 seconds in a pre-competition test with a peak speed of 14.5 meters per second, according to ITHome. Tiangong Ultra also jumped 2.8843 meters in the standing high jump, far surpassing human records.

These performances mark a dramatic leap from the first edition of the Games, where the best 100-meter time was 21.50 seconds. The competition drew 666 teams from 16 countries across six continents with 2,056 robots competing — a 138% increase in teams and a quadrupling of robots compared to the inaugural event, as 21st Century Business Herald reported.

Industry Momentum and Scale

Beyond the spectacle, the data tells a story of rapid industrial growth. According to Xinhua News, China’s robot industry enterprises above designated size achieved revenue exceeding 300 billion yuan in 2025, with average annual growth of over 20% in the past five years. In the first half of 2026, revenue reached 165.5 billion yuan, up 24.5% year-on-year.

The 2026 Humanoid Robot Industry Development Report, released at the WRC main forum, projected that China’s full-year humanoid robot production could exceed 100,000 units in 2026. In the first half of the year, China’s humanoid robot shipments exceeded 40,000 units, with China’s global share rising to 97%, according to CCTV News.

The WRC itself drew over 300 exhibiting enterprises with more than 2,000 products on display, supported by 30 international organizations, with international speakers comprising 30% of main forum participants, as detailed by the Beijing government.

From Demonstration to Deployment

A key theme across both events was the industry’s transition from showcase demonstrations to practical applications. “I have attended many international robot industry conferences, and they mostly talk about the future. Here I see changes that have already happened,” said Jack Perry, Chairman of The 48 Group Club (UK), as quoted by Xinhua.

This shift is visible across multiple sectors. Nearly 10 mainstream automakers including Xiaomi, BYD, SAIC, and FAW are conducting embodied intelligence deployment verification on production lines. Logistics company Senaide’s autonomous loading/unloading robots can move up to 1,000 items per hour using self-developed vertical large models. Xiaoyu Intelligent Manufacturing’s welding robots have been deployed in more than ten frontline factories covering construction steel, shipbuilding, and bridge construction, according to Science and Technology Daily.

At the WRC, the Beijing Humanoid Robot Innovation Center released the Tiangong Omni, a lightweight humanoid robot (1.35 meters, 39 kilograms) described as the world’s first Humanoid Native open base combining perception, mobility, and whole-body general control, as covered by ITHome. The robot features an open secondary development system designed to lower development barriers for the industry.

The Road Ahead: Challenges and Opportunities

Despite the momentum, industry leaders acknowledge significant hurdles remain. Wang Xingxing, founder of Unitree Technology, told the WRC main forum that the biggest bottleneck is the insufficient alignment between AI models and physical robots. “The overall trend is correct, but the last few centimeters or last few millimeters of deviation cannot be well matched with the real world,” he said, as 21st Century Business Herald reported. Efficiency and generalization remain key challenges, with robots still less efficient than humans in many tasks.

To accelerate deployment, the World Robot Cooperation Organization and the Chinese Institute of Electronics jointly launched the Global Robot Application Exploration Plan at the main forum. The initiative will select 1,000 application scenarios annually for free robot trials and secondary development, according to China News Service.

Xu Xiaolan, Chairman of the Chinese Institute of Electronics, highlighted the broader economic impact: “The embodied intelligence industry has strong driving capability with a 1:10 multiplier effect, powerfully boosting production quality and consumption upgrading.” She noted that large-scale deployment will also create new knowledge-intensive positions including data analysts, robot behavior trainers, and human-machine collaboration dispatchers.

What to Watch

As Beijing builds a full lifecycle management system for robots covering eight stages from R&D to recycling, and explores “sandbox” management for robot performance entertainment, the industry stands at what experts describe as a critical inflection point from “small-batch trial” to “large-scale deployment.” With Unitree’s landmark listing on the STAR Market in August 2026 — the first humanoid robot stock with a day-one market cap of 341.8 billion yuan — investor confidence in the sector is clear. The coming months will reveal whether Chinese robot makers can overcome the efficiency and generalization bottlenecks that remain the industry’s greatest challenge.
