El Niño 2026: Record Ocean Heat Signals Historic Event

The world’s oceans have hit their highest temperature on record, with global sea surface temperatures reaching 21.1°C (70°F) on August 22, according to the European Union’s Copernicus Climate Change Service. The record comes as scientists warn that the developing El Niño weather pattern could become the strongest in living memory, with potentially unprecedented consequences for global weather patterns.

The new record, which surpasses the previous mark of 21.09°C set in March 2024, is particularly notable because global ocean temperatures typically peak in March or April at the end of the Southern Hemisphere summer. Setting the record in August signals the exceptional intensity of the current event, as BBC News reported.

An Unprecedented El Niño

The 2026-27 El Niño has developed with remarkable speed since NOAA issued its official El Niño Advisory in June 2026. Sea surface temperatures in the Niño 3.4 region, the key monitoring zone in the central Pacific, have been running well over 2°C above normal, with the Niño 1+2 region near South America exceeding +3°C.

The UK Met Office has warned that this event is likely to be the strongest in living memory, with forecasts suggesting sea surface temperature anomalies could exceed 3°C - a level never before recorded in modern history. “We should be clear that this is an unprecedented event,” said Prof Adam Scaife, head of long-range forecasting at the Met Office, as BBC Weather reported. “I have never seen an El Niño signal this intense in our forecasts.”

Some forecast models project even more extreme outcomes. The European Centre for Medium-Range Weather Forecasts (ECMWF) shows the event peaking around 4°C in December, which would “obliterate” the previous record, according to Gizmodo.

Tracking Above Historical Giants

The current event is tracking above even the great 1997 and 2015 El Niños at the same point in their development, according to Berkeley Earth scientists Zeke Hausfather and Robert Rohde. The Niño 3.4 region has been at record temperatures for approximately 80 consecutive days since early June 2026, based on data going back to 1982.

Dr. Zeke Hausfather of Berkeley Earth noted that “we have many months to go while this event continues to develop and that’s one of the reasons that we have increased confidence that this will be a record-setting event.” He added that “it’s not beyond the realm of possibility to say this might be the strongest El Niño event in 500 or even 1,000 years.”

NOAA has reported a 90% chance of a “very strong” event in its August 2026 outlook, with 63% odds of a super El Niño (peak of at least +2.0°C ONI), as Gizmodo detailed.

Record Ocean Temperatures

The ocean temperature record is a clear indicator of the event’s intensity. “This record is another clear signal of an ocean under growing stress,” said Dr. Samantha Burgess, Deputy Director of Copernicus. “El Niño is adding heat to the system, but it is doing so on top of decades of human-driven warming.”

The timing is particularly concerning to scientists. “The fact that we are already breaking records is an early indicator of how strong the El Niño is becoming,” said Dr. Jeremy Grist, senior research fellow at the National Oceanography Centre in Southampton, as Al Jazeera reported. “All things being equal we might expect the ocean temperature record to be broken again in March [or] April 2027.”

Global Impacts Already Unfolding

The effects of this powerful El Niño are already being felt around the world. The UN World Food Programme warns that the 2026-2027 El Niño could push at least 49 million more people into acute food insecurity by the end of 2027. “El Niño is a massive threat to the food security of millions who are already vulnerable,” said Carl Skau, WFP’s acting executive director.

The Panama Canal Authority has announced it will cap daily passages as of September 4, 2026, due to low rainfall caused by El Niño conditions, as The Irish Times reported. Rainfall from May to August was 34% below the historical average in the canal region.

Weather patterns are already shifting globally, including suppressed monsoon rains in India, reduced hurricane activity in the Atlantic (only three named storms so far in the 2026 season), and drought conditions in parts of Central America.

2027: The Hottest Year on Record?

Climate scientists are increasingly confident that the combination of this super El Niño and ongoing human-driven warming will make 2027 the hottest year on record. “Hence, 2027 is very likely to replace 2024 as the warmest year on record,” said Dr. Nick Dunstone, Met Office climate scientist.

Berkeley Earth analysis suggests a 95% chance that 2027 will be the hottest year on record, with global temperatures potentially reaching 1.67-1.85°C above pre-industrial levels. Robert Rohde, chief scientist at Berkeley Earth, noted that “we think it’s now more likely than not that there’s enough warmth generated by an extraordinary El Niño event that we could have record warmth in 2026 and much stronger warmth in 2027.”

At the upper end of the projected range, 2027’s global temperature could resemble levels the planet might not otherwise reach until around 2040 - temporarily fast-forwarding the current warming trend by about 13 years, as Scientific American reported.

Climate Change Context

The oceans absorb more than 90% of the excess heat trapped by greenhouse gas emissions. Long-term fossil-fuel-driven warming has already raised ocean temperatures by 0.8°C, according to Copernicus. The World Meteorological Organization says there is “no evidence” that climate change increases the frequency or strength of El Niño events, but the impacts are more extreme in a warming world.

As Euronews noted, warmer oceans contribute to sea-level rise through thermal expansion, increase the likelihood and intensity of marine heatwaves, and can disrupt food chains and threaten industries such as fishing and aquaculture.

What to Watch For

The El Niño event is expected to peak between November 2026 and January 2027. Forecasters will be closely monitoring whether the event reaches the extreme projections of 3.5-4°C anomalies, which would make it the strongest El Niño in recorded history.

As Prof Stephen Belcher, the Met Office’s chief of science and technology, noted: “This summer we have experienced heatwaves across Europe reminding us of the effects of climate change, this large El Niño is a reminder that natural variations in the climate system are also at play, adding to the stresses of climate change.”

The coming months will reveal whether this event lives up to its extraordinary forecasts - and what it means for a world already grappling with the impacts of a warming planet.
