Belgium Summons US Ambassador Again Over Insulting Post
Belgian Foreign Minister Maxime Prévot has summoned US Ambassador Bill White for the second time in 2026 after White posted an Instagram story mocking Health Minister Frank Vandenbroucke. Prévot called the ambassador’s comments “unacceptable,” marking the latest escalation in a fraught diplomatic relationship between Brussels and Washington.
According to Politico, White posted an AI-generated image of Vandenbroucke on what appeared to be a cigar box bearing the Dutch text “Schaadt iedere vorm van levensvreugde” (“Damages every form of joy in life”), with the caption “Who’s the biggest LOSER in Belgium?” The post was a direct reaction to Vandenbroucke’s push for stricter alcohol advertising regulations, including a new mandatory health warning.
The Alcohol Advertising Dispute
The controversy stems from regulations approved by the Belgian federal government in March 2026, which require the health warning “Alcohol schaadt de gezondheid” (“Alcohol damages health”) on all alcohol advertising. The new wording, advised by the High Health Council based on recent scientific research, replaces the previous slogan “Alcoholmisbruik schaadt de gezondheid” (“Alcohol abuse damages health”) and reflects evidence that any alcohol use carries some health risk.
The regulations also prohibit free alcohol distribution with magazines and ban influencer marketing targeting young audiences. The Belgian Brewers association has launched a campaign against the changes, with 100 brewers and about 1,000 sector representatives signing an open letter opposing the new slogan, as VRT NWS reported.
Prévot’s Response
“It is unacceptable that an ambassador accredited in Belgium turns against a member of our government in this way,” Prévot said, as reported by VRT NWS. “As Minister of Foreign Affairs, I will summon the American ambassador in the coming days.”
Defense Minister Theo Francken also weighed in, telling VRT NWS Terzake: “Oh Bill… I will speak to him about it. I’m going to tell him that stoking the animosity that already existed between the two doesn’t contribute anything.” Francken described the current US-Belgium relationship as “a transatlantic marriage crisis” and “a difficult period we need to get through.”
Vooruit party chairman Conner Rousseau responded on Instagram as well, saying: “Bill can be a funny guy. But he knows nothing about healthcare. He only follows what daddy Trump says. They only care about money, not our health,” according to RTL Nieuws.
A Pattern of Confrontation
This is not the first time White has been summoned by Belgian authorities. In February 2026, he was called to account after accusing Belgium of “ridiculous and antisemitic prosecution” of three Jewish mohels in Antwerp under investigation for performing circumcisions without proper medical qualifications. White also called Vandenbroucke “very rude” and “quite obnoxious” during that dispute, as Politico reported at the time.
The February confrontation escalated further when White demanded that Rousseau retract an Instagram video comparing President Donald Trump and ICE officers to Hitler, and declared Rousseau would be banned from entering the US. After a de-escalatory meeting on February 24, both sides signaled a détente, with White saying “We had a great conversation… We are back on track,” as Politico reported.
White, a former president of the Intrepid Sea-Air-Space Museum and a former Democratic donor who switched to supporting Trump after 2016, was confirmed as ambassador in October 2025. His nomination was controversial due to social media posts promoting 2020 election conspiracies and support for Dries Van Langenhove, a far-right Belgian activist convicted of racism and Holocaust denial, according to Wikipedia.
Broader Pattern of Trump-Era Diplomacy
White’s confrontational approach is part of a broader pattern under the Trump administration, as NOTUS noted. Trump’s Polish ambassador sparked a feud with the Polish government, US Ambassador to France Charles Kushner was summoned by French authorities, and US Ambassador to Canada Pete Hoekstra has repeatedly suggested Canada should become the 51st US state.
What’s Next
The summons is expected to take place in the coming days, with Prévot indicating he will register Belgium’s displeasure over White’s conduct. The US embassy in Brussels did not respond to requests for comment, as Brussels Morning reported.
The brewing dispute over alcohol advertising regulations continues to simmer, with the Belgian Brewers association pressing for alternative measures and the High Health Council defending the scientific basis for the new warning. How the diplomatic confrontation and the policy debate intersect will be a key question in the weeks ahead, as Belgium navigates what Francken described as a challenging period in transatlantic relations.
