2026 CIFTIS Trade Fair Opens with Notable Debuts

The 2026 China International Fair for Trade in Services (CIFTIS) is set to open September 9-13 at Shougang Park in Beijing, featuring several notable first-time showcases and debuts that underscore China’s commitment to opening its services trade sector. Approximately 90 countries and international organizations will set up exhibitions or host events, with more than 1,800 enterprises participating offline, including 456 Fortune Global 500 companies and industry-leading enterprises, according to Xinhua News.

First-Time Exhibition Areas

For the first time, CIFTIS will establish a ‘China Services’ exhibition area in the core area of the theme exhibition, showcasing innovative achievements and typical cases from various regions in the services trade sector, as reported by China News Service. The fair will also debut an ‘Exhibition Zone for Enterprises Dedicated to Overseas Expansion Services,’ bringing together more than 30 professional service providers covering finance, law, accounting, advertising, and human resources to provide one-stop services for enterprises going global.

“In providing a platform for high-quality services from various countries to be displayed and traded, and helping them expand into the Chinese market, this year’s CIFTIS will also, for the first time, set up Overseas Expansion Services zones in multiple specialized exhibitions,” said Yan Dong, Vice Minister of Commerce, at a State Council Information Office press conference on August 28, as Sina News reported.

Norway Named Guest Country of Honor

Norway serves as the Guest Country of Honor for 2026, creating a national pavilion showcasing green energy, marine technology, and life sciences. Henning Kristoffersen, Commercial Counselor at the Norwegian Embassy in China, told CGTN that the honor means “twice the size of the pavilion” and significantly more attention from Chinese media and government. “We expect the traditional industries that are doing very well in China, seafood, nutrition, health, shipping, maritime to do even better,” he said. “But maybe even more important, we want new companies to get into the Chinese market and use CIFTIS as a platform for them to showcase their product to the huge Chinese market.”

Innovation and Global Debuts

More than 80 enterprises and institutions, including Alibaba, Schneider Electric, GE HealthCare, and MSD, plan to release over 180 innovative outcomes covering AI, healthcare, cultural exports, and green/low-carbon development, according to the Beijing Government. Multiple areas will achieve global first launches or China first exhibitions. The health services exhibition will debut a ‘Future Medical Technology Industry Frontier Exhibition Area’ featuring 8 precision medicine and cell therapy innovative SMEs, as Yicai detailed. The Big Medical Group will unveil the world-first X/gamma-ray integrated radiotherapy platform ‘TaiChiRT.’

The Global Services Trade Summit, co-hosted by UNCTAD, WIPO (first time as co-host), the Ministry of Commerce, and the Beijing Municipal Government, will be held on the morning of September 9. The fair is organized around four themes: ‘Open Integration,’ ‘Win-Win Cooperation,’ ‘Digital Intelligence Innovation,’ and ‘Green Development,’ with nearly 100 forums and conferences scheduled.

Economic Context

Beijing’s economic performance provides strong momentum for the fair. In the first seven months of 2026, the city’s actual use of foreign capital grew 69.6% year-on-year, with both goods export scale and services export scale reaching record highs, as China News Service reported. Beijing Vice Mayor Tang Wenhong said the city will continue to promote services sector opening through pilot free trade zones and demonstration zones.

Nationally, China’s total services trade import/export reached 3.77975 trillion yuan in the first half of 2026, up 8.3% year-on-year. Knowledge-intensive services exports reached 805.67 billion yuan, up 12.8%, accounting for 53.5% of total services exports, according to Global Times.

Analysis and Outlook

The first-time presentation of overseas expansion services as an independent exhibition area reflects a broader strategic shift. Xu Guangjian, a professor at Renmin University of China, told Global Times that “China has entered a new stage of high-level opening-up, transitioning from commodity-and-factor-flow-based opening to institution-based opening.” The debut of this exhibition area “is precisely an important manifestation of institution-based opening in the services trade sector.”

Since its establishment in 2012, CIFTIS has grown over 13 years to become the world’s largest comprehensive exhibition focused on trade in services, connecting 1.1 million visitors globally, as Xinhua English noted. The 2026 edition’s emphasis on ‘going global’ support services signals a new phase in China’s services trade development, where the focus is shifting from attracting foreign services into China to helping Chinese services expand internationally.
