China’s Summer Travel Season Shatters Multiple Records
China’s 2026 summer travel season, which ran from July 1 through August 31, has set multiple new records across rail, air, and highway transportation as millions of travelers took to the roads during the peak holiday period, according to Xinhua News. The record-breaking figures underscore the continued recovery and growth of domestic travel demand, with new infrastructure playing a pivotal role in handling the surge.
Record Railway Passenger Numbers
National railways projected 1.01 billion passengers for the 62-day summer season, averaging 16.29 million per day, according to Guangming Daily. By August 19, cumulative railway passengers had reached 744 million, up 4.2% year-on-year, with daily averages of 14.89 million. At the season’s midpoint on July 31, Zhejiang Online reported that 432 million passengers had been carried, while Beijing News confirmed the same mid-season figure.
Student travel emerged as a standout trend, surging 44.6% year-on-year. China Railway Guangzhou Group organized 155 student group trips totaling 29,000 passengers, covering destinations including Beijing, Changsha, Guiyang, Fuzhou, and Lanzhou. New themed study-tour trains were also introduced, including the “Southern Train · Hongmian” from the Greater Bay Area to Quanzhou and the “Ziyou Zizai” series to the northwest, creating immersive travel classrooms, as noted by Global Times.
Airport Records and New Infrastructure
Airports across the country reported historic performance. Guangzhou Baiyun Airport, operating its newly opened T3 Terminal and fifth runway for the first summer season, set single-day records on August 15 with 1,909 flights and 309,000 passengers—both all-time highs, as reported by CCTV Finance and Yunnan Net. Despite multiple typhoons including “Maysak” and “Bavi,” the airport maintained high on-time performance through coordinated operations.
Feng Yujia, deputy director of the operations control center at Guangzhou Baiyun International Airport, noted that the T3 terminal’s enhanced capacity meant passengers experienced no longer check-in or queue times despite record volumes.
Dalian Zhoushuizi International Airport also broke its single-day record on August 20, handling 80,400 passengers. Wu Menglu, deputy section chief of the airport’s marketing department, said the airport completed 28,000 flight takeoffs and landings and served 4.28 million passengers since July 1, far exceeding last year’s levels. The airport also launched its first direct route to Dali, Yunnan, with four weekly flights.
New High-Speed Rail Lines Deliver Strong First Seasons
Newly opened infrastructure faced its first major summer test with impressive results. The Xi’an-Shiyan High-Speed Railway, a 350 km/h line crossing the Qinling Mountains, carried 2.33 million passengers in July alone, according to Xiaoxiang Morning News via MSN. The line brought rail access to counties like Shangluo, Shanyang, and Yunxi for the first time, cutting travel time from Shangluo West to Xi’an East to just 24 minutes.
Xi’an East Station, a new major hub, sent 1.329 million passengers as of August 27, operating 84.5 pairs of trains daily covering 45 cities including Beijing, Shanghai, and Guangzhou, according to China Youth Daily. Qiao Guotong, assistant engineer at the station, described the implementation of “one-day-one-schedule” operations with added peak-line trains and nighttime high-speed services to fill capacity gaps.
In Liaoning, the Shenyang-Baishan High-Speed Rail carried 1.752 million passengers in its first summer season, while the China Railway Shenyang Bureau averaged 700,000 daily passengers with a projected total of 43.36 million. Shenyang Station completed passenger service upgrades before the season, including relocating security checkpoints and implementing a “combined ticket-check” system that allows passengers to board with a single ID scan.
Broader Travel Recovery Context
The summer surge reflects a broader recovery in China’s travel industry. According to the Ministry of Culture and Tourism, domestic residents made 3.463 billion trips in the first half of 2026, up 5.4% year-on-year, with domestic travel spending reaching 3.21 trillion yuan, as reported by China Youth Daily and Guangming Daily’s epaper.
Unaccompanied minor travel reached record levels, with China Southern Airlines handling 661 unaccompanied children departing on domestic flights in a single day. Gong Xiaojia, a ground service staff member, said the airline added special vests for young travelers and dynamically adjusted check-in counters to accommodate the surge.
