Xi in Bishkek for SCO Summit, Kyrgyzstan State Visit
Chinese President Xi Jinping arrived in Bishkek on Sunday afternoon for the 2026 Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) Summit and a state visit to Kyrgyzstan, underscoring Beijing’s deepening engagement with Central Asia as the bloc marks its 25th anniversary. Xi and his wife, Peng Liyuan, were greeted at Manas International Airport by Kyrgyz President Sadyr Japarov and his wife, Aigul Japarova, in an unusually elaborate welcome ceremony that reflected the warmth of bilateral ties, according to Xinhua News.
“You are family,” Japarov told Xi upon arrival. “When you come to Kyrgyzstan, you are coming home,” as reported by Xinhua’s English service.
The welcome ceremony featured traditional Kyrgyz customs, including young women presenting pastries and honey, honor guards lining the red carpet, performances with traditional komuz instruments, falconry displays, traditional warrior formations, horsemen, and yurts. Local teenagers sang Chinese songs in Mandarin for the visiting delegation, as Global Times reported.

A ‘Golden Period’ of Cooperation
In a written speech delivered upon arrival, Xi described China-Kyrgyzstan cooperation as entering a “golden period” of rapid development. He noted that the two countries share a time-honored traditional friendship, with the majestic Tianshan Mountains standing as witnesses to millennia of friendly exchanges between their peoples.
“Over the 34 years since the establishment of diplomatic relations, the China-Kyrgyzstan relationship has withstood the test of a changing international landscape, maintained sound and stable development throughout, and reached the high level of a comprehensive strategic partnership for a new era,” Xi said, according to China Diplomacy.
The visit marks Xi’s third trip to Kyrgyzstan, following previous visits in September 2013 and June 2019. It comes as Kyrgyzstan celebrates the 35th anniversary of its independence on Monday, a date Xi’s arrival was timed to coincide with, as noted by Global Times.
Economic ties between the two nations have deepened significantly. China-Kyrgyzstan trade reached $11.7 billion in the first seven months of 2026, with Chinese exports of electric vehicles, lithium-ion batteries, photovoltaic products, and mechanical and electrical goods growing rapidly. China remains Kyrgyzstan’s largest trading partner and largest source of foreign investment, with direct investment exceeding $2 billion. Major infrastructure projects include the China-Kyrgyzstan-Uzbekistan railway, oil refining facilities, photovoltaic power generation, and wastewater treatment plants.
SCO Summit at 25
The SCO Summit, scheduled for August 31 through September 1, marks the organization’s 25th anniversary. Leaders from 21 states are expected in Bishkek, including Russian President Vladimir Putin, Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Kazakh President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev, and Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian, according to Economist.kg.
The summit will include an expanded SCO Plus format meeting, and participants are preparing a package of outcome documents including the Bishkek Declaration. The main session of the Council of Heads of State will take place on September 1, with the opening ceremony of the VI World Nomad Games on August 31.
On the evening of August 30, Japarov and Xi met informally over dinner to discuss bilateral cooperation and key issues ahead of the official events, as Economist.kg reported.
Geopolitical Significance
The summit takes place against a backdrop of shifting regional dynamics. As Anadolu Agency noted, the gathering brings together some of Eurasia’s most powerful leaders amid a tentative thaw in China-India relations following years of border tensions, and as India and Pakistan navigate the aftermath of their brief conflict last year.
Iranian President Pezeshkian’s attendance comes as Tehran faces growing US economic pressure, while conflicts in the Middle East and Ukraine, and instability in Afghanistan, are expected to feature in discussions. The SCO’s 10 members represent approximately 3.4 billion people and account for about 25% of global GDP.
“As global competition intensifies between the US-led West and the emerging Global South amid a fractured international order, Beijing has placed greater weight on the SCO and Central Asia as a whole,” Li Lifan, an expert on Russia and Central Asia at the Shanghai Academy of Social Sciences, told SCMP. “Through the SCO, China can project power and influence aspects of the global order.”
Deepening Bilateral Ties
The visit is expected to broaden cooperation beyond traditional areas of trade, investment, and connectivity to new fields including green development, the digital economy, artificial intelligence, and coordination in multilateral affairs, according to analysts cited by Global Times.
Djoomart Otorbaev, former prime minister of Kyrgyzstan, said the country prepared such a special ceremony to express its appreciation for China’s role in cooperation with Kyrgyzstan. “We try to show our kind feelings toward the leader of great China,” he told Global Times.
“When a neighboring country is genuinely happy about your success, that sincerity is truly precious. It reflects President Xi’s respect for Kyrgyzstan, its people and the development path they have chosen,” said Alikbek Jekshenkulov, former Kyrgyz foreign minister, as reported by China Diplomacy.
The summit will also mark the end of Kyrgyzstan’s SCO chairmanship and the handover to Pakistan, which is set to lead the organization for the next year and host the 2027 leaders’ summit. Xi is expected to conclude his visit to Kyrgyzstan on September 3 and proceed to Egypt for a state visit.
What to Watch
As leaders gather in Bishkek, several key dynamics will be closely watched: the interaction between Xi and Modi amid the tentative thaw in China-India relations; the coordination between Xi and Putin as the two powers deepen their partnership; and how the SCO balances its expanding membership with consensus-based decision-making.
The summit is expected to produce a Bishkek Declaration marking the SCO’s 25th anniversary, alongside documents on the organization’s development and regional and international issues. The bloc’s next challenge, as Anadolu Agency observed, will be turning its scale into influence while maintaining consensus among an increasingly diverse membership.
For China and Kyrgyzstan, the visit cements a relationship that both sides describe as being at its best period in history. As Xi prepares to draw a new blueprint for building a China-Kyrgyzstan community with a shared future, the outcomes of this summit will likely shape the trajectory of Eurasian cooperation for years to come.
