China-ASEAN Trade Tops $1 Trillion in Historic Milestone

China and ASEAN bilateral trade surpassed the $1 trillion mark for the first time in 2025, reaching $1.05 trillion with a year-on-year increase of 7.4 percent, according to data announced at a State Council Information Office press conference in Beijing on September 1. The milestone underscores the deepening economic integration between China and the Association of Southeast Asian Nations, with China maintaining its position as ASEAN’s largest trading partner for 17 consecutive years, while ASEAN has been China’s largest trading partner for six consecutive years.

A Trade Relationship on the Rise

The achievement marks a historic moment in a partnership that has grown steadily since the early 2000s. The China-ASEAN Free Trade Area (CAFTA), launched in 2002, has evolved through multiple upgrades—from Version 1.0 fully implemented in 2010 to Version 2.0 in 2015, and most recently to CAFTA 3.0, signed at the 28th ASEAN-China Summit in Kuala Lumpur in October 2025. The upgraded protocol expands cooperation into nine new areas, including digital economy, green economy, and supply chain connectivity.

According to Xinhua News, the figures were announced by Vice Minister of Commerce Yan Dong, who detailed the trade milestone alongside other key indicators of China-ASEAN economic cooperation.

Momentum Continues into 2026

The trade momentum has carried strongly into the current year. From January to July 2026, China-ASEAN total trade reached $744.41 billion, up 24.7 percent year-on-year and accounting for 21.8 percent of China’s total foreign trade during the period, as reported by the Chinese government’s official English portal.

Investment cooperation has also deepened significantly. As of July 2026, cumulative bilateral investment between China and ASEAN, along with Chinese enterprises’ completed engineering contract revenue in ASEAN, both exceeded $515 billion. Several landmark infrastructure projects are advancing steadily: the Malaysia East Coast Rail Link has surpassed 94 percent completion, the Jakarta-Bandung High-Speed Railway in Indonesia has carried more than 15 million passenger trips, and the China-Laos 500-kV power interconnection project has been officially launched.

“China-ASEAN cooperation in emerging sectors has yielded notable results, further consolidating the two sides’ positions as each other’s most active investment partners,” Yan said at the press conference, as reported by China News.

Expert Analysis: A Deliberate Choice for Free Trade

Analysts view the trade milestone as a deliberate and pragmatic choice in favor of free trade amid rising global trade uncertainty. Zhou Mi, a senior research fellow at the Chinese Academy of International Trade and Economic Cooperation, told Global Times that China and ASEAN member states have maintained strong momentum in commercial and investment cooperation, underscoring their commitment to free trade and economic globalization.

“This has helped build confidence among businesses and market participants, even as the international trade environment becomes more complex,” Zhou said. He attributed the growth to a shared commitment to open markets and a more stable institutional framework, noting that both sides have made notable progress in trade complementarity by leveraging their different positions in global and regional industrial chains.

Looking Ahead: CAFTA 3.0 and the 23rd CAEXPO

2026 marks the fifth anniversary of the China-ASEAN Comprehensive Strategic Partnership, and the upgraded free trade pact is expected to provide a stronger institutional foundation for future cooperation. The agreement is anticipated to create a platform for dialogue on cross-border data flows, green cooperation, and the alignment of standards and rules—steps toward more coordinated regional economic integration.

Attention now turns to the 23rd China-ASEAN Expo (CAEXPO), scheduled for September 17-21 in Nanning, Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region. Under the theme “CAFTA 3.0 Opportunities, Better Life,” the expo will focus on free trade area development and regional high-quality growth, showcasing new achievements in China-ASEAN economic and trade cooperation, as detailed by Beijing Daily.

The trade milestone reflects a partnership that has become a model of mutually beneficial cooperation between economies at different stages of development. As the CAFTA 3.0 framework takes effect and regional integration deepens, China-ASEAN economic ties are poised to reach even greater heights, with the People’s Daily noting that the upgraded agreement signals both sides’ resolve to jointly build an open, inclusive, and rules-based regional integrated market.

With the 23rd CAEXPO set to showcase the fruits of this deepening partnership, and the CAFTA 3.0 upgrade protocol moving toward implementation, the coming months will test whether the momentum of this historic trade relationship can be sustained and expanded across new frontiers of economic cooperation.
