Woman, 67, Dies in House Fire in Niel; Daughter Hospitalized

A 67-year-old woman has died in a serious house fire that broke out Saturday morning in the Wirixstraat in Niel, a municipality in Belgium’s Antwerp province. Her daughter was injured and transported to hospital, according to VRT NWS.

The Incident

Emergency services received the report of the fire at approximately 8:45 AM, with callers reporting heavy smoke in the street. Police spokesperson Joris Van Camp of the PZ Rupel local police zone told HLN that the fire department arrived immediately and began extinguishing operations. All adjacent homes were evacuated as a precaution.

By the time firefighters arrived, the blaze was fully developed, with flames spreading from the ground floor to the upper level. The fire was described as intense on the ground floor, with heavy smoke development visible from a distance.

Firefighters discovered the body of the 67-year-old mother on the first floor of the residence. Despite efforts to provide medical care, she could not be revived. The daughter, who managed to leave the house in time, was transported to hospital after suffering from smoke inhalation, as reported by the Belga news agency.

Community Response

Niel’s mayor, Ingrid Meulders, rushed to the scene after being notified by the fire department. “When I arrived there was a very large smoke development,” she told HLN. “Everything here was just black from the thick smoke cloud. The emergency services were very quickly present, for which thanks. They did their utmost to safeguard everything as well as possible.”

Speaking about the victim, Meulders said: “The lady was found on the first floor. She was brought out by the fire department, they gave her the best possible care, but unfortunately it did not help.”

Regarding the daughter, the mayor expressed the community’s sympathy: “She is currently receiving the best care. On behalf of the municipal government, we express our deepest condolences. It is a heavy blow for the family.”

The family also lost pets in the fire. The household included three dogs, two cats, and fish. One dog perished in the blaze, though two others were rescued and are being cared for by family members.

Investigation Underway

The house has been declared uninhabitable due to the extensive damage. Adjacent properties were evacuated as a precaution but were ultimately not damaged.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation. “There are no indications yet,” Mayor Meulders stated. “The fire department is still doing a check in the house, but we are now waiting for the experts who will conduct the necessary investigations.”

The tragic incident serves as a stark reminder of the dangers of residential fires. In Flanders, where Niel is located, smoke detectors have been mandatory in all homes since 2020, a measure introduced to reduce casualties from house fires, which claim dozens of lives across Belgium each year. Smoke, rather than the flames themselves, is often the primary cause of death in such incidents, as it spreads rapidly and can incapacitate occupants before they can escape.

The fire occurred during daytime hours, which may have contributed to the daughter’s ability to escape the burning home. However, the intensity of the blaze and the speed at which it spread proved fatal for the 67-year-old victim.

Authorities have not released further details about the victims. The investigation into the fire’s origin is expected to continue in the coming days, with fire experts scheduled to examine the scene. The community of Niel, a municipality of approximately 11,000 residents located along the Rupel river south of Antwerp, has been left in mourning by the tragedy.
