Power Outage Hits Thousands in Belgian Haspengouw Region
Thousands of households across multiple municipalities in Belgium’s Haspengouw region were left without electricity for approximately one hour on Sunday morning after a defect at a high-voltage substation in Alken. Power was fully restored by 9:45 AM following a network reconfiguration by utility crews, according to VRT NWS.
The outage began at approximately 8:45 AM and affected communities including Wellen, Nieuwerkerken, Sint-Truiden, and Zepperen, a sub-municipality of Sint-Truiden. Fluvius, the Flemish distribution network operator, confirmed the cause and said technicians worked quickly to resolve the disruption.
Swift Response Restores Power
“There was a defect in a high-voltage substation in Alken, and as a result the wider region was without power from 8:45 AM,” Stijn Faelens, spokesperson for Fluvius, told HLN. “This included the municipalities of Wellen, Nieuwerkerken, Sint-Truiden, Zepperen.”
Faelens acknowledged the inconvenience caused to residents but emphasized the rapid response. “Something like that is always annoying, of course,” he said. “Fortunately, our technicians were able to quickly reconfigure everything and after an hour everyone had power again.”
The quick resolution was achieved through network reconfiguration rather than physical repairs, suggesting the fault lay in switching equipment rather than a catastrophic failure. The exact cause of the defect has not yet been publicly identified.
Second Outage in Three Days
The incident marks the second major power outage in the province of Limburg within three days. On Friday, September 4, a separate outage affected thousands of households across North Limburg, including the communities of Hamont, Achel, Kaulille, Bocholt, Sint-Huibrechts-Lille, Neerpelt, and Overpelt. That disruption was caused by a fault on the medium-voltage network and was also resolved within approximately one hour, as VRT NWS reported.
The back-to-back incidents have raised questions about the reliability of electricity distribution infrastructure in the province. OpenNieuws noted that in both cases, the disruption was limited to roughly one hour thanks to rapid intervention by Fluvius technicians. It remains unclear whether the two incidents are related.
Infrastructure Under Pressure
The outages come amid broader concerns about Belgium’s electricity grid. The country’s distribution infrastructure is facing increasing strain from growing electricity demand driven by electrification—including heat pumps and electric vehicles—as well as grid congestion issues. Both Elia, which operates the high-voltage transmission grid, and Fluvius have announced multi-billion euro investment plans to strengthen the network.
Fluvius manages the medium- and low-voltage distribution networks across all Flemish municipalities. High-voltage substations like the one in Alken serve as critical connection points between the national transmission grid and regional distribution infrastructure.
The affected municipalities in the Limburg portion of Haspengouw—an area known as Belgium’s largest fruit-growing region—have a combined population of approximately 68,500 residents. The outage affected “thousands of households” across these communities.
What to Watch For
While power was restored quickly and the disruption was relatively brief, the frequency of recent outages in Limburg may prompt closer scrutiny of the region’s grid infrastructure. Under Flemish regulations, customers are entitled to compensation if an outage exceeds four hours—a threshold that was not reached in either incident.
Fluvius has not yet disclosed the precise cause of the Alken substation defect, and it remains to be seen whether an investigation will reveal systemic issues or simply isolated equipment failures. Residents and local authorities will be watching closely as the utility continues its assessment.
