Nine Detained After Rioters Clash with Police in Oostende

Police in the Belgian coastal city of Oostende detained nine people on Sunday evening after a large group of rioters turned against officers, setting waste on fire and hurling objects at them. The confrontation, which began around 7 PM near the Guldensporenlaan in the Nieuwe Stad neighborhood, lasted approximately four hours before order was restored.

According to Het Laatste Nieuws, police responded to a report of a fight involving approximately 40 people. “Around 7 PM we received a report of a fight in the vicinity of the Guldensporenlaan,” said police spokesperson Simon Fiers. “According to the caller, it appeared to be an organized fight between two persons, with about 40 people present in total.”

Escalation and Confrontation

When multiple police patrols arrived at the scene, the crowd refused to disperse and instead turned against the officers. What followed was a prolonged cat-and-mouse game between police and rioters that lasted for hours. Rioters threw fireworks and other objects at the attending officers, while waste and cardboard were set ablaze on the street.

During the evening, police received additional reports of fights at various other locations across the city, suggesting the unrest was not confined to a single area. It was not until approximately 11 PM that calm was finally restored to the coastal city.

“In total, nine people were administratively detained,” Fiers confirmed. Administrative detention is a preventive measure under Belgian law typically used to maintain public order during disturbances.

Initial findings from the police investigation suggest the incident was indeed an organized fight, as the original caller had reported. Videos of the confrontation with police are circulating on social media, and the police are continuing their investigation.

The Nieuwe Stad Neighborhood

The incident took place in the Nieuwe Stad, a social housing neighborhood in Oostende built in 1972, consisting of high-rise apartment blocks housing approximately 407 units. The area has faced persistent challenges that have drawn attention from local politicians and residents alike.

In April 2025, VRT NWS reported that neighborhood residents held a wake for a 53-year-old woman who was murdered in one of the apartment buildings. The killing underscored residents’ concerns about safety in the area.

Local political party PVDA has also raised concerns about the neighborhood’s condition, highlighting moisture problems, broken elevators, concrete rot, drug issues, and frequent illegal dumping. As Het Laatste Nieuws reported, PVDA council member Dirk Vanmassenhove told the municipal council that the neighborhood suffers from a high sense of insecurity, urging authorities to “listen to the needs of the older population who live here.”

The neighborhood is currently undergoing a major renovation project called “De Vernieuwde Stad” (The Renewed City), which will replace the aging apartment blocks with 485 new housing units.

Pattern of Youth Disturbances

Sunday’s riot is not an isolated incident in Oostende. In May 2026, police had to intervene when a large group of young people caused significant disruption on the city’s beach. As Showmag.nl reported, videos showed hundreds of people gathered around a fight, with police needing to intervene to prevent further escalation. The incident drew political reactions, including from Vlaams Belang leader Tom Van Grieken.

Earlier, in January 2025, VRT NWS reported that police in Oostende appealed for witnesses after a video circulated showing a young person being beaten by peers near the Leffingestraat.

The Oostende police zone has identified tackling drugs as one of its priorities. Police chief Hannelore Hochepied has stated that while crime rates in Oostende are similar to other Belgian cities, the city does face a notable drugs problem.
