Record Cold Hits North China as Rainfall Shifts Southward

A powerful cold air mass sweeping across northern China is bringing the first large-scale temperature drop since the Start of Autumn, with 13 major cities including Beijing, Tianjin, and Xi’an expected to record their lowest temperatures of the second half of the year. The weather system, which arrived on September 7, is also shifting the region’s main rainfall zone southward while intensifying precipitation in the Sichuan Basin, according to Xinhua News.

The cold air event coincides with the White Dew solar term, the third solar term of autumn, which began on September 7 at 22:41. Traditionally marking the transition from warm to cool weather, White Dew signals increasingly frequent cold air activity and widening day-night temperature differences, as IT之家 explains.

Meteorologists describe this cold front as an “all-round player” — one that not only covers a wide area with strong cooling power but also brings heavy rainfall and severe convective weather to many parts of the north, according to China Weather Network meteorological analyst Yu Qun, as reported by Dazhong News.

Dramatic Temperature Drops Across the North

On September 7, parts of Inner Mongolia, western Jilin, and central Heilongjiang experienced temperature plunges of 14 to 16 degrees Celsius — a change so dramatic it was described as a seasonal shift. In Inner Mongolia’s Chifeng and Tongliao regions, temperatures fell by more than 17 degrees Celsius.

Over the coming three days, southeastern Northwest China, southern North China, the Huanghuai region, and eastern Northeast China will see temperature drops of 4 to 6 degrees Celsius, with localized declines of 8 to 10 degrees Celsius, accompanied by winds of force 4 to 5 and gusts reaching force 6 to 7, as CCTV News reported.

The China News Service confirmed that 13 major cities — Harbin, Changchun, Shenyang, Hohhot, Taiyuan, Beijing, Tianjin, Xi’an, Lanzhou, Yinchuan, Xining, Jinan, and Zhengzhou — will see their highest temperatures hit new lows since the Start of Autumn. Beijing’s maximum temperature on September 8 is forecast at just 22 degrees Celsius, the lowest for the second half of the year, according to Beijing News.

Rainfall Shifts Southward, Sichuan Basin Braces for Heavy Rain

The main rainfall zone in northern China is shifting southward on September 8-9, while the Sichuan Basin sees intensifying precipitation, with some areas expecting heavy rain or torrential downpours. The Central Meteorological Observatory has issued a blue rainstorm warning covering parts of central-southern Hebei, eastern and south-central Shanxi, central Shaanxi, southern Ningxia, eastern Gansu, southeastern Qinghai, the western Sichuan Basin, southwestern Yunnan, and southeastern Tibet.

Yu Qun explained the mechanism behind the autumn convective weather: the subtropical high remains stable and continues to control central and eastern China, with its edge transporting moisture northward while cold air moves east and south. The convergence of warm and cold air triggers widespread rainfall, and some areas may experience severe convective weather such as thunderstorms, strong winds, or hail.

Disaster Risks and Regional Impacts

Meteorological authorities have warned of secondary disaster risks in geologically fragile areas of Qinghai, Gansu, and Shaanxi, where prolonged and heavy rainfall could trigger mountain torrents, landslides, and mudslides. The Central Meteorological Observatory advised the public to stay away from dangerous areas such as mountains and river valleys.

Meanwhile, the cold air is expected to finally break the persistent heat spell in the Sichuan Basin, which had consistently topped national high-temperature rankings since September 5. Chongqing will still see high temperatures on September 8-9, but relief will come by September 10-11, with maximum temperatures potentially dropping to 28 degrees Celsius, as Sichuan Guan News reported.

Autumn Arrives Early

Cities including Lanzhou, Yinchuan, Harbin, Changchun, Taiyuan, and Xining have already entered meteorological autumn, defined as when the five-day running average temperature falls below 22 degrees Celsius. The current cold air event is expected to push the autumn boundary southward, potentially starting the autumn season in the Beijing-Tianjin-Hebei region and southern Northeast China, according to Guangming Online.

What to Watch For

As the cold air continues its southward advance, additional light to moderate rain is expected in the Sichuan Basin and Western Sichuan Plateau from September 11-13. The Xinhua News Agency reports that residents across northern China should monitor weather changes closely, add clothing promptly, and remain vigilant against potential geological hazards in affected regions.
