China’s National Day Box Office Falls to 1.165 Billion Yuan

China’s 2026 National Day holiday box office totaled 1.165 billion yuan (about $163 million), the National Film Administration announced on October 8, capping one of the weakest cinema seasons in roughly a decade as consumers shifted holiday spending toward travel and the holiday slate failed to produce a breakout hit.

According to the official figures released via Xinhua, the seven-day season (October 1–7) drew 31.99 million admissions and exceeded 100 million yuan in daily box office on each of the seven consecutive days. Showings rose 2.21% year-on-year to 3.29 million, while the average ticket price slipped 0.77% to 36.41 yuan. Domestic films accounted for 78.7% of box office revenue.

A Steep Year-on-Year Decline

The headline figure masks significant weakness. At 1.165 billion yuan, the holiday total fell about 36.6% from 2025’s 1.835 billion yuan, with admissions down 36.12% from 50.09 million last year, according to Sohu, which described the season as the lowest in roughly 12 years — comparable to 2014’s National Day take of 1.118 billion yuan (excluding service fees).

By comparison, the 2024 National Day holiday generated 2.105 billion yuan over seven days. The opening day of this year’s season brought in only about 181 million yuan, reported as a roughly 13-year low for a National Day opening, and no single new release saw preview ticket sales exceed 100 million yuan before the holiday began.

The Top Five Films

The season was led by Traces of the Detective (《神探之痕迹》), a crime drama based on the life of Cui Daozhi, a decorated firearms-and-toolmark examiner, which earned 423 million yuan. The comedy What Do You Mean, Couple? (《什么意思夫妇》) followed with 244 million yuan, and the imported horror title Resident Evil: Outbreak Night (《生化危机:爆发夜》) placed third with 174 million yuan. Welcome to Dragon Restaurant (《欢迎来龙餐馆》) took 55 million yuan and the family animation Peppa Pig: Perfect Holiday (《小猪佩奇·完美假期》) rounded out the top five with 54 million yuan.

“Traces of the Detective incorporates crime and suspense elements, using genre-film techniques to open a new path for films about heroic models, effectively stimulating public enthusiasm for moviegoing,” Hu Jianli, secretary-general of the China Film Critics Society, told Xinhua. Lai Li, a market analyst at Maoyan Entertainment, noted that staggered releases — including Rebirth 2 on October 3 and Resident Evil: Outbreak Night on October 5 — helped lift daily takings mid-season.

Market Reaction and Structural Pressures

The soft results weighed on Chinese film stocks. On October 8, A-share cinema shares traded broadly lower, with Bona Film Group down more than 4% and Jiecheng Shares off over 3%, while Hengdian Film and Enlight Media each fell more than 2%, per Financial World (JRJ). China Film Group bucked the trend, gaining over 2%.

Industry commentary attributed the decline largely to supply-side factors: the absence of a major “main melody” blockbuster or heavyweight domestic production, no single film that broke out to draw broad audiences, and a slate of mostly medium-budget titles each targeting narrow sub-audiences — crime, comedy, imported horror, and family animation.

Analysts had foreseen a soft season. Citi projected roughly 1.6 billion yuan (down about 12% year-on-year) and Top Consulting estimated around 1.28 billion yuan (down about 30%); the actual 1.165 billion yuan came in below both forecasts.

The 2026 holiday also coincided with an extended bridging-leave window created by the adjacent Mid-Autumn Festival, and analysts flagged that record travel demand — including booming county-level tourism and sharp growth in outbound trips — may have diverted discretionary spending away from cinemas.

The “Film Plus” Bet

Against the box office downturn, the industry is leaning into a strategy known as “film+” (电影+), which integrates cinemas with tourism, dining, retail, and derivative products. In June 2026, the National Film Administration and the State Administration for Market Regulation issued a joint notice with 10 measures to guide cinemas toward diversified operations.

Those efforts were visible over the holiday: live broadcasts of the China Open tennis tournament were screened in more than 100 cinemas, and tie-in tourism campaigns invited audiences to visit filming locations. “Using new supply to create new demand and new demand to lead new supply, cinemas deepening diversified operations not only bring fresh experiences to different groups but also revitalize screen assets as urban cultural spaces,” Zhou Baohua, dean of Fudan University’s School of Journalism, told Xinhua.

As of October 7, China’s full-year box office stood at 30.746 billion yuan across 784 million admissions.

What’s Next

Attention now turns to whether the domestic market can rebound during the 2027 Spring Festival season, when three major local blockbusters — The Wandering Earth 3, Part 1, Creation of the Gods 3, and Full River Red 2 — are already slated for release. Whether the “film+” diversification strategy can offset weaker theatrical demand, and whether studios respond to this year’s weak National Day results with stronger holiday programming, will be key questions for the months ahead.
