China’s Auto City Embraces Methanol-Electric Green Tech

Shanghai’s Jiading District, known as China’s international automotive city, is pioneering a methanol-electric hybrid technology route for commercial vehicles, creating what officials describe as a complete “demonstration chain” from vehicle manufacturing to energy supply. The initiative, led by Geely’s Farizon New Energy Commercial Vehicle Group, represents a significant new pathway for traditional auto manufacturing hubs to transition toward sustainable energy solutions, as Xinhua News reported.

A Third Technology Route

While the global automotive industry has largely focused on pure electric and hydrogen fuel cell technologies, Jiading’s approach embraces a third option: methanol-electric hybrids that combine liquid methanol fuel with electric drive systems. This technology is particularly suited for heavy-load, long-distance commercial transport scenarios where pure electric vehicles face range anxiety and lengthy charging times.

Industry officials in Jiading argue that the new energy vehicle transition should not be limited to a single technology path. “Facing different application scenarios, multiple technology routes should be encouraged to compete, verify, and develop together in practice, forming comprehensive competitive advantages,” a Jiading Industrial Zone official told Xinhua.

Fuel-powered vehicles still account for 80 percent of China’s commercial vehicle fleet, making them the primary source of road transport carbon emissions. Methanol-electric technology offers a practical near-term solution, with fuel costs nearly 50 percent lower per kilometer compared to traditional diesel vehicles, according to operational estimates.

From Project to Demonstration

Two years ago, Farizon announced plans to establish a methanol-electric commercial vehicle project in Jiading Industrial Zone. The project has since achieved several milestones, including the launch of a new energy commercial vehicle base, the first delivery of methanol-electric dump trucks in Shanghai in March, and the opening of Shanghai’s first methanol comprehensive refueling station in June.

The methanol-electric dump truck delivery ceremony in March marked a key moment for the technology. “Our vehicles use liquid new energy methanol as fuel,” said Liu Hong, deputy general manager of Farizon’s Shanghai Marketing Center. “Compared with traditional fuel vehicles, fuel costs are greatly reduced. The vehicle has a range of over 500 kilometers, and refueling takes only 5 minutes.”

Shanghai’s first methanol comprehensive refueling station, the Jiading Xingle methanol station, opened on June 15 at 2619 Jia’an Road. The station, co-built by Farizon and China National Offshore Oil Corporation (CNOOC), was converted from an existing gas station and now serves methanol, gasoline, diesel, and electric vehicles simultaneously. A light truck can be fully refueled with methanol in as little as 10 minutes.

Building the Ecosystem

The conversion of existing gas stations is central to the strategy. Rather than building new infrastructure from scratch, the retrofit approach dramatically shortens construction timelines and reduces land requirements. Xu Tao, general manager of Jiading Industrial Zone Economic Company, said the district will “promote more traditional stations to be upgraded into methanol comprehensive refueling stations, creating a replicable and promotable ‘Jiading model’ for Shanghai’s zero-carbon transportation construction and green energy transformation.”

The project has also extended beyond road transport. The world’s first methanol-electric cargo ship, the Yuanchun 001, completed its maiden voyage at Shanghai Port in October 2025, as on.cc Eastnet reported. Xu Zhaobing, general manager of Farizon Methanol Energy Company’s East China region, noted that the company has achieved batch deployment of methanol-electric heavy and light trucks in Shanghai, with the ship filling the gap in methanol-electric application in Shanghai’s urban construction sector.

Policy Momentum and Industry Growth

The methanol push is supported by a rapidly evolving policy environment. In December 2025, China’s National Development and Reform Commission and National Energy Administration formally recognized methanol fuel’s legal status, and a technical standard for converting gas stations to methanol refueling stations was released in January 2026. Over 70 policy documents supporting methanol vehicle promotion have been issued by national ministries and provincial governments, according to China Youth Daily.

Industry data shows the sector is gaining traction. More than 1,000 methanol refueling stations have been built nationwide, with plans to reach 1,500 by the end of 2026 and 4,000 by the end of 2027. China’s methanol vehicle fleet now exceeds 60,000 units, and projections suggest the market could surpass 2 million vehicles by 2030 with over 10 percent penetration.

Farizon has been China’s top new energy commercial vehicle brand for four consecutive years, with global cumulative sales exceeding 500,000 units. Methanol heavy truck sales have grown from under 1,000 units in 2022 to thousands in 2025, as Autohome noted in its industry analysis.

Green Methanol and Energy Security

Green methanol can be produced through multiple pathways, including electrolysis of water using renewable energy combined with captured CO2, conversion of biomass and municipal waste, and clean utilization of coal and natural gas. This flexibility makes methanol a domestically producible fuel that reduces dependence on imported petroleum.

Shanghai is also advancing green methanol for shipping. In July, a locally produced green methanol project successfully completed a 2,824-ton “ship-to-ship” refueling operation at Shanghai Port, marking what the Shanghai State-owned Assets Supervision and Administration Commission called a milestone for the city’s green fuel supply chain. Shanghai’s 15th Five-Year Plan proposes building an international shipping green fuel refueling center, with green methanol as a core focus.

A Replicable Model

As China Economic Net reported, Jiading is attempting to transform a technology route into a testable, replicable demonstration practice. The district has established cross-departmental coordination mechanisms, streamlined regulatory approval processes, and worked with local authorities to develop safety protocols for methanol refueling operations.

Looking ahead, Shanghai’s first methanol-electric bus demonstration route is planned to begin operations in the second half of 2026, testing the technology’s stability, economy, and environmental performance in urban public transit. The results will inform broader deployment decisions.

“In the future, we will continue to deepen our layout in Shanghai, increase the scale of methanol-electric product deployment, and expand methanol-electric applications in more scenarios,” said Fan Xianjun, CEO of Farizon New Energy Commercial Vehicle Group. “More traditional gas stations will accelerate transformation into integrated methanol-oil-electric refueling stations, forming a multi-energy complementary, efficient and convenient new energy service system.”

What to Watch

Key challenges remain. Large-scale green methanol production projects are still two to three years from full operation, infrastructure density needs further expansion, and public awareness of methanol vehicles remains limited. However, with policy support, industry investment, and a growing demonstration footprint, methanol-electric technology is positioning itself as a credible third pillar in China’s commercial vehicle decarbonization strategy.

The Jiading experiment will be closely watched as a potential blueprint for other automotive manufacturing hubs across China seeking to diversify their green energy pathways.
